  I missed this one.....
Review created: 04/23/08
by:

Clearly I'm not a movie critic, because I just don't see what all the hoopla is about - this movie was not what I expected - certainly not the quality of the other movies by the Coen brothers. With the Academy Awards and all the great publicity, I just kept waiting and waiting for the great movie to develop and before I knew it, it was over and left me very disatisfied. The quality of star actor names is all that carried the movie. It had a great story and plot, but just never seemed to develop. Did Bartram win an Oscar for this role? If so, what the h*ll for? Actually, it seemed to me that towards the end, the writers just got bored with themselves and just said - "OK, I'm done! Whew! Glad that's over!"

I guess I just missed it all. Just wasn't that good of a movie and is certainly not going on my list of all time hits - I bought the DVD one day, watched it that night, and sold it on eBay the next day. Good riddance.

A true Oscar winner ... in almost any year.
Review created: 04/21/08

No Country for Old Men came out to incredible reviews and for once, lived up to them. Bardem's psychotic killer is simply too good to pass up, it's no wonder he won an Oscar for playing such a part. Just a tip, a co-worker actually had a nightmare about his character after watching this movie. His character would be at home in any horror movie, he's that creepy.
Many people miss the point of the movie and that fact somewhat gives the movie an enigma surrounding it. It's so easy to see what is happening with the Tommy Lee Jones character and almost no one moves past him to look at the other characters in the movie. When you watch the movie, and I refuse to give up plot twists in a review, you'll notice that almost all the characters in the movie are .... lost. That all the characters in the movie have literally... no place to go. It wouldn't matter how old they got, they'd still be lost. None of the primary characters have any plans for life, either current or for their future. This point isn't taken into account often. I'm certain the book adds much more focus to the title of this movie, but I haven't read it yet.
When watching the film you can almost fall in love with the late seventies air surrounding it. Many movie makers truly fail to actually make the film fit into the time period they are made for but the Coen brothers obviously know what they're doing and their talents are not lost in this film.
I only wanted to point out things that others may not have, and give my true opinion of this movie. I would recommend this movie to anyone who may have enjoyed Fargo (although this movie doesn't feel as dark as Fargo was) or enjoys watching movies that, in the end, make you simply sit there and think.
I highly recommend this true Oscar winner, which might have been so, in almost any year...

  More Money, More Problems
Review created: 04/21/08

As for the plot, one guy was fortunate enough to find a pack full of money in the middle of a battlefield and take it, but unfortunate enough to realize later that he was messing with the wrong people.

This was a good starter and, until the middle of the movie, things were going pretty interesting and I felt very attached to the history. Blood and shooting everywhere and everytime driven by the Chigurh-Moss chase. A real and enjoyable countryside thriller.

Then, the conclusion: Moss was killed, Chigurh got hit by a car bump and just walks away (apparently not being busted) and the sheriff, once eager for catching the murderer, ended up sitting, reflecting about life and the past. If there's a subtle message in the end of the movie, I don't really know, but I have to confess that this finale has not made much of a sense to me.

Although I found the end confusing, this movie is good in the general sense and rescues the idea that low or middle budget movies can be as interesting and entertaining as pricey ones. I also liked the production: more images and action than dialogue, a lot of suspense and not much music running in the background. Suspense scenes are better when there is no or just a little sound with it.

One of the most intriguing movies ever produced
Review created: 04/14/08

One of the greatest movies I have ever seen. The detail put into the plot and characters is incredible and the each of characters seems to be 100% original and extremely realistic. The movie seems so realistic because of the lack of music. Not one musical note takes up space in the movie. So if you put yourself into the movie, thats exactly what it would sound like. No jaws music in the background, just you, running from an SUV as they shoot round after round at you.

No Country for Old Men - Close to Great
Review created: 04/11/08(updated 04/11/08)

Again the Coen brothers dazzle and confuse with their latest movie "No Country for Old Men", which is right up there with Rambo when it comes to killing people, good or bad, en masse.

I will not go into plot and story because there are enough others who do, but I will say, that there are some very good acting in there, especially, by Tommy Lee Jones. It is very well produced, very well directed, well scored, and has a dark quality that permeates almost every scene throughout the film. I don't know if it really original, but there is definitely something there. It seems to be one of those films that, momentarily at least, leaves an impression on you. An impression that varies from person to person. It makes you think. The ending is not typical, it makes you think. Unfortunately the Coen Bros left out the clues that were in the book. If intentional or not.

It is quite graphic in its portrayal of violence, which I personally do not mind, but some people absolutely hate. It is definitely not a kids film, but no one ever said it should.

My rating is 7 of 10 Stars

Old story. I am disappointed in this picture. Story just drags on for no reason. Cannot call it a true Western or a thriller movie. It is kind of hybrid. I wish I had something good to say about this movie but I just do not. It is just an average movie. **

  Great movie-lousy ending
Review created: 04/10/08
by:

This is one of those movies that grabs your attention, takes you on a roller coaster ride-then just ends, and leaves you frustrated.Sort of like the finale of "The Sopranos".Tommy Lee Jones' sheriff is just a supporting character here. The film belongs to Josh Brolin,in a breakout role,as an average guy who stumbles across a suitcase full of cash at the scene of a drug deal gone bad out in the desert. He takes the cash and is pursued relentlessly by a creepy psychopath(Javier Bardem),looking to recover the money and kill Brolin's character.Lots of killing ensues, and finally at the end Brolin is killed. The killer wanders off after a car wreck, and we don't see him again. We also never see where the money ends up.Great performances, lots of action-but a truly unsatisfying ending.

  No Country for Old Men

bought the NewPhone 74205 three weeks ago and was immediately impressed with the number of features available on this inexpensive phone. It has a 1M-pixel camera, video camera, and speakerphone. The NewPhone's size is perfect for carrying in a pocket and the battery has a pretty good lifespan of roughly 4 hours. My only complaint is that the menu system on the phone makes you click four times before you can find someone in the address book, set an alarm, or perform a additional functions. Other phones I've owned have simpler menus and get you to important features easily. Overall, I'd recommend the phone if you're on a budget.

With Tommy Lee Jones I expected something great but this is a true dud. It's bloody, graphic, and pontless. It was also difficult to decide who the star was supposed to be. Don't waste your time or your money, even if you get to view it for free with popcorn included.

I have been a fan of the Coen brothers since Blood Simple and have liked everything they've done. Some of their movies are, to my mind, among the best ever done (Miller's Crossing, O Brother Where Art Thou, e.g.) This film is troubling but I would have to place it very high. It portrays a world in which evil can win (if you like happy endings, you ain't gonna find one here--unless you're morally twisted)but in many respects I can see this playing out in the world we live in, given all that's going on, politically, business-wise etc. The performances are strong--Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Kelly MacDonald, and, of course, Tommy Lee Jones, who never seems to miss. People criticize it because of the violence but mostly these are people, I have noticed, who haven't seen it. Besides, the violence drives home the point and I thought that aspect of it was handled very well. This a troubling film but well worth seeing. I watched it three times in a week and was drawn in every time.

  Another Coen masterpiece!

If you like nice, neat, unambiguous endings, where everything turns out the way you want and expect, this one is NOT for you. If you like films that have the power to hold you completely in their grip throughout, with great acting, a great screenplay, crisp editing (both video and sound), and great cinematography, then this is the film for you. This was one of those films that "affected" me for weeks after seeing it the first time. One of the best from the Coen brothers cannon of great films (Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, Oh Brother.., etc.). Buy it, watch it, enjoy it!

  Don't expect a great ending

This movie was good until the end. If you have a blu ray player this movie is visually spectacular. The last 30 minutes of the movie made no sense at all. You don't know who ends up with the money, why Tommy Lee Jones is talking to some guy in a house for 15 minutes or who the guy is. You really never know why anyone is chasing anyone else. Overall its a poor movie. Don't waste your time unless you have blu ray and just want to show it off.

No Movie For Faint of Heart
Review created: 04/05/08
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The Coen brothers made their mark on Independent Film with their stark and razor-sharp contrast of criminal desperation and indifference to the simple, lawful and uncomplicated lives of normal folk in the award-winning 1996 "Fargo."

In "No Country For Old Men", the Coens have duplicated the character-driven narrative of "Fargo", but, this time, to a level more laden with violence and less focused on the good ordinarily found in most human hearts. The ensemble cast pulls off a nearly-impossible feat: All are flawed, yet each is someone - anyone - with whom a viewer may identify:

With one neatly-packaged, superbly acted exception: Javier Bardem's Oscar-winning performance as a man completely devoid of conscience or regret, compassion or reason. He is the compleat evil we all hope who never appears in our path, nor in our dreams.

The film will haunt you, disturb you, and in the end, perhaps disappoint you; but it will never be a filmatic experience you are likely to forget.

J. B. Guillory
