My kids and I liked this book a lot. Even though they had seen the movie of Zathura they liked reading the book too. The illustrations are just great. The unusual angles of the drawings make them interesting. I like how the illustrator used the full page, with large size art. Also that it was in black and white was different. This same Author/Illustrator wrote Jumanji. It is amazing to me that the two big-screen movies came from Allsburg's children's books. Wonderful simple childrens stories that can grow as big as a child's imagination!

) My son is going to be teaching elementary ed come September, and is trying to build his own library of good books for kids to read. (Most schools don't have enough, and it is up to the teachers to provide them.) His college profs strongly recommend books by Chris Van Allsburg, but they are expensive, and you just never see them at garage sales or thrift shops. So......as part of my son's Christmas presents, I shopped on Ebay and Half.com and bought him an assortment of used Van Allsburg books. I paid more than I usually would for a used book, but still far less than if I had bought them new. Also, I had the convenience of shopping from my home, rather than driving around looking for them. Most of the books looked to be very lightly read, and still have years of life left in them. My son was thrilled, and I feel that I got some great deals.

Zathura is a great children's book by Chris Van Allsburg. Van Allsburg also wrote 1981's Jumanji in 1981. Following the same concept, two brothers this time -- Danny and Walter -- find an old board game in the park outside their house. When they begin playing, they get transported into space where they're forced to evade flying meteors, deranged robots, and hungry, meat eating Zorgon alien pirates. Behind the action story however, is a lesson about brotherly love and friendship.
Zathura has also just been released as a major new movie by director Jon Favreau. The movie's screenplay mostly adheres to the book with a few exceptions -- new a few new characters including older sister, Lisa, divorce dad played by Jim Robins, and a roving astronaut who the boys rescue. In rescuing the astronaut, the boys not only save themselves but also teach Walter an important lesson to love his brother (but, I won't ruin the surprise).
All in all, a great book and good movie.
