This movie overcame my negative expectations and won me over despite it's numerous flaws. Why? The characters, though drawn with broad strokes, are nonetheless likable, and I found myself rooting for them going into the final act.
Dennis Quaid and Rene Russo are as attractive as actors my age get, and their characters are both essentially good. That was a good place to start.
Quaid is a 2-Star Coast Guard Admiral just assigned to take over leadership at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. A widower of several years, he presides over his brood of 8 kids along with housekeeper Linda Hunt. Russo portrays his high school sweetheart, still living there in New London. She is also widowed. After 4 children of their own, she and her previous spouse adopted 6 more. There is a real international feeling in that house. She works at home in a messily creative studio as a designer who sells things at places like Saks Fifth Avenue.
The admiral's kids are all quite regimented. They keep a tidy ship, adhere rigidly to written schedules and call their father "Admiral", which I thought sort of odd despite 22 years in the Navy myself. My children call me "Dad". But I digress. Russo is raising her children to be free-thinking spirits.
There would be no movie if the designer and the admiral didn't get together. The "conflict" that must be resolved is between the military brats and the flower children.
There is much to scoff at. There are several frenzied scenes of physical comedy - all ending with Quaid covered with wet stuff. With 20 family members there is scarcely a moment for any degree of character development. Rip Torn is absolutely fantastic in the right role - here he is badly miscast as the Commandant of the Coast Guard. At one point he is so pleased at the promotion of his subordinate Quaid that he lifts him off the ground in a big bear hug in one of those big Washington, D.C. rotundas. All the Admirals I know in real life are slightly more reserved in large public places. A portion of the family conflict comes when Quaid's 2-star Admiral is nominated to become the replacement for 4-Star Torn. This is about as realistic as the person who just got the job supervising orientation of new employees to the Ford Motor Company suddenly being named CEO. I know this sort of plot device happens in film all the time, but even a kindergarden understanding of arithmetic would allow you to know that a 2-Star Admiral doesn't replace a 4-Star without that intermediate 3-Star step.
Still - I liked it. I liked the couple. I liked the kids. I wanted things to work out for them.
Dennis Quaid.... DENNY BOY! WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? The kids are great, and dennis make a great match for rene russo, but, over all, I cant seem to figure out why he took this role, it muat have been the money, cuz the plot was bland! Thanks for reading my opinion, and if you'ld like to check out my store, I am permitted by ebay to provide you a link here: http://stores.ebay.com/SellsEveryTime
It's a cute story, definitely good for the whole family. I really like the band Hawk Nelson and they sing a song in it, at the party the kids have, so I definitely thought it was worth owning. It's kind of like Cheaper by the Dozen, so if you enjoyed that then you'll enjoy this as well.
I don't remember a lot from the original movie, Lucille Ball's and Henry Fonda's movie. The basic Story line is the same 8 kid's on Dad's side and 10 on Mom's. Conservatives and Liberals in one house. The possibilities are endless and the writers came up with some good ideas and some that were a little predictable. Overall a great family movie, 7 - 10 year olds will probable love it.
I really love this movie. It shows how fun big families are. I enjoyed that my whole family could watch it together. Dennis Quaid and Renee Russo are wonderful in it. It is so fun to watch, over and over again. I bought it also to use in the car for long road trips and camping trips. Great movie!!
I bought the movie, Yours, Mine, & Ours for my husband and I to watch at home and also thought perhaps our adult children and their families might enjoy watching when they come at holidays. We thoroughly enjoyed all the antics of trying to blend together two very large families that were very opposite. The children immediately dislike each other and try to think up ways to break up the marriage but in the end things change. This movie is very clean with no bad language or sex scenes, somthing that is hard to find today. It is acceptable for very young children to watch and enjoy.
This is a good family movie. My kids ages 6,7,10 and I loved it. It was funny and nice . I really like how the tow familys became one nice happy family at the end .
Yours, Mine & Ours is a typical comedic family movie, much like the movie Cheaper by the dozen. It is an excellent movie to watch as a family and loaded with laughs! Recommend to families who love comedy, with children aged 7+, especially preteen & teen.
Reminds me a little of cheaper by the dozen with all the kids but it is different. I saw a couple of kids from the nick channel play in this movie. It was a pretty good movie. The big kids at the daycare enjoyed it.
fast shipping I got the dvd in just a few days !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Clean, funny, and different enough from the original to keep one's interest, the newest version of this classic explores modern relationships with candid humor.
My favorite part of this movie was the dynamics between a hippie-esque, "leave them to express their creativity" mom and a military father reminiscent of the "Sound of Music." The kids' plans are original and funny, though the final realization that they love and need each other was pat and predictable.
Overall, good movie for family night or, if you're like me, for being free from the fear of adult content.
i love this movie, it was so cute how the two had been love since high school and finally got back together after all those years and it did not matter how many kids they had. and eventually the kids learned to like each other in the end.
I loved Dennis Quad and Rene Russo. Great family film for the whole family. Nice to know that clean is still a good movie to make. Thanks to the writers and directors for giving us something for the whole family to sit and watch together.
This is a great movie. It is filled with so many funny things! I watched the movie once then I bought an outfit on Ebay that was used in the movie so I bought the DVD to watch again to see when the outfit was used in it. Dennis Quaid and Rene Russo are wonderful actors and are almost always in a good movie.
nice to find a movie that has a good cast and that ALL the family can watch, i thought it got better as it went along and it was not hard liking all the kids a good mix, i had a copy sent to me in New Zealand we have all watched it three times now.
I bought this movie because the kids enjoyed it at the theatre. It is PG13 so the whole family can watch. It is great movie I would recommend it to everyone.
A good, wholesome movie for the family. No nudity, foul language, cute story line. My daughter loves Drake from the show Drake and Josh- so of course, since he's in it- she loved every minute of it.
