A life changing book
Even for those who have read a number of books regarding child-rearing and/or family psychology, 'For your own Good' is a groundbreaking work. I found it absolutely riveting and couldn't put it down. It is especially interesting for those who have Germanic or European heritage, as it illuminates the parenting traditions of these cultures particularly. You will see your relatives (and possibly yourself) acting out these subconscious patterns. Of particular note is a study of Hitler's childhood, which excuses nothing but explains a great deal. Fascinating. Alice Miller is both brilliant and brave.
