When I first saw this movie, I was shocked! Child pornography disguised as social commentary was my initial response. I watched it again without judging it on those terms and found it to be honest and candid about a subject most people would not want to deal with. Or remember. Emotional attraction between young boys. Happens all the time! Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer - remember? Or you and your "best" friend. Is it love? Yes! Does it mean a physical relationship must follow? No! But it happens. And this movie does a great job of revealing that. Brave and uncompromising!

Danish Film Honest Portrait of Youth
Review created: 01/03/07

Liberal Danish standards allow the director of this 1970's film to include the language that boys really use with one another and to explore their interests honestly. Unfettered by the Moral Majority, one gets a real picture of youthful sexual awakening told with understanding and tenderness. The youthful duet of young actors, portraying the lead roles of Bo and Kim, do a believable job of relating the intimate connection between the two boys. We miss a little in the subtitled translation, but the expressions are still readable.

I have viewed only the 1978 VHS version and the photography leaves a little to be desired - somewhat bland by today's standards. A little stilted, but the story is the important event. This is a memorable film and not to be judged without realizing the age in which it was portrayed.

What a great movie. This movie takes place at a private boys school and shows how various relationship begin. It is a movie that should be seen by everyone. Young guys fall in love with each other and an older woman in the school teaches a boy about the pleasure of sex. No one in this movie felt abused or forced into a relationship and that is as it should be. This movie is a tender display of love and relationships.

I thought that this was a well made film, even though the subject matter may be difficult for some. Perhaps this film will be redone in english.

Coming of Age: "You Are Not Alone"

This movie was produced and directed in Northern Europe during the late 1970s. I purchased this DVD, because the reviews it got were very good. Many international movies have great actors in them. "You Are Not Alone" shows how people can defy other peoples' expectations of them, even if it does not make any sense at all.

You Are Not Alone DVD - Quite Worth Watching
Review created: 11/04/09

An historic piece of cinema. A sub-titled, ground-breaking, sensitive look into a boy's journey to discover self. Very bod for the time it was made. (No sex scenes.)

An insightful coming of age film.

While many descriptions of this movie will make it out to be some sexual discovery/awakening between the two main characters, the movie is based upon a great deal more than that; that particular issue hardly, if ever, comes up at all. The two main characters, Bo and Kim, meet out of happenstance and develop a close relationship that develops into "something more." They are held up in a Dutch all boys school, set in the 70's, where they go instead of public school. Controversy is sparked when one of their classmates is reprimanded and then expelled as to make an example of him for displaying explicit photos of women in his room and then in the bathroom. Feeling that the administration has wronged their fellow classmate, the entire school decides to rise up against their dictator-like headmaster. This film is provocative, insightful, and challenging. There is what some refer to as "incidental" nudity in the film. This is where the "sexual awakening" starts to be put into play. If you can't look past the "incidental" nudity along with the few scenes that if you stretched them to their utmost capacity could be considered homo-erotic, then I think you would be better suited with another film. This cutting-edge movie for the time displays attributes admirable of any age by all the boys in the everyday life of the school. I would more than recommend this movie for anyone. Just be sure that you're mature enough to watch the movie with an open mind. There are some scenes that may catch you unawares, but the movie more than makes up for that in the wonderful portrayal of the deep and loving friendship of Bo and Kim.
