Album Notes Faust: Zappi Diermaier, Hans Joachim Irmler, Jean-Herve Peron. When it comes to "post-rock," "Krautrock," or whatever other cute name the music press can come up with for the German-inspired, neo-prog music that began cropping up in the second half of the 1990s (in the music of Stereolab and Tortoise and Flying Saucer Attack), Faust is the band that wrote the book. YOU KNOW FAUST is the pioneering German electro-psychedelic band's first studio effort since its '70s heyday. YOU KNOW FAUST is an apt title: bands like Pavement continue to acknowledge Faust's influence, and Krautrock scholar Julian Cope has immortalized them in print. The '90s version of Faust is as unconventional and inventive as fans would hope. Guitarist-bassist Jean-Herve Peron and keyboardist Hans-Joachim Irmler create knotty sonic sculptures that stick out at odd angles, just waiting to catch the listener with an unexpected jolt. Faust's largely instrumental sound is equally indebted to European avant-garde music and to the adventurous spirit of '60s American weirdos like the Fugs, the Velvet Underground and the Holy Modal Rounders. The several short, fragmented pieces and the few extended, atmospheric jaunts on YOU KNOW FAUST more than justify the group's claim to the Krautrock throne.
