I first met Charles Garrett and Roy Lagal back in the 1970s I had a very cheap No Name Metal Detector. I could not have found a railroad rail if I had not tripped over it. Yet I watched these two guys from a few hundred feet away. They would walk along and every 20 foot or 50 foot sometimes they went over a hundred foot. They would stop and dig for a few minutes or just scrape there foot on the ground and then read down a pick something up. Realize I was out in the pucker Brush and these guys simply smiled waved and then went on walking and swinging. I still smoked Cigarettes back then. I walked back to the truck and got one and just watched them keep working a grid out across the wash they were in. Up the side of a hill. I could not take it any more. I walked over and introduced myself and asked what kind of machine they were using. Neither Detector had a name or anything on it. One said it was a CTX type which meant nothing to me. The taller of the two walked over to their truck and got a book out. He handed it to me and said if I liked to read that to read this book and it might help me out. I happened to notice that on the back of the book was a photo of the guy who gave me the copy of it. No the book was not this one You Can Find Gold. It was an older book than this. We chatted for a while and then we all went our own way. I read that book and another couple of them that had their photos on them. I did go out and buy one of their detectors but not because of the books but I have never forgotten them walking along and picking up one target after another. They did happen to show me about a dozen nuggets each from that days hunt. They did let me try out one of there machines. I hit a small nugget. They even told me to keep it. I buy every book either of these guys ever write. I love to read and I really like to read about gold. I will say this. They did not make ten cents off me that they knew of. they gave me a 10 dollar book the let me try there machines. The fact that they were for real was what got me to be impressed. Hey I was nobody and they were nice can you beat that. My wife and I both own Garrett Detectors to this day. I also Have two copies of this book. I bought one in a store and My wife had one on order for me. That's OK maybe I will meat some one out there that is not hitting much and I can give him that extra copy someday and maybe he will find something with my detectors. Don't ya know what goes around comes around right Folks
