Album Notes Includes liner notes by Jordan Oakes, Pat Pierson, Rich Osmond. All tracks are previously unreleased. The first of four volumes of previously unreleased power pop tunes, YELLOW PILLS VOLUME ONE is a pretty good indication of the state of power pop in 1993. New material by older practitioners of the genre outnumbers songs by new artists. Dwight Twilley, Shoes, The Cowsills (just the boys, no Mom or Susan), 20/20 (whose 1979 anthem "Yellow Pills" gave the now-defunct fanzine which compiled these discs its name), Jim Basnight, The Spongetones, The Rubinoos, E'Nuff Z'Nuff, Tommy Keene, The Flashcubes, Buddy Love, and even ex-Raspberries guitarist Wally Bryson all contribute new songs. This material sometimes overshadows the more derivative songs by the newer artists; however, Adam Schmitt's sparky "Speed Kills," Chris Von Sneidern's soaring "Open Wide," and Ken Sharp's genuinely Beatles-esque "Break Down the Walls" match the best of the older folks' songs.
