If Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's 1998 release ACME was the first set of some anonymous dive bar gig, then XTRA ACME USA, a studio collection of five remixes of songs from ACME and 14 other tunes that didn't quite make the first cut, is an impromptu second set. The crowd has thinned out to the hardcore fans with any hint of pretense washed out by alcohol or adrenaline or both (as if Jon, Judah, and Russell had any pretense to begin with), as familiar friends in the audience jump on stage to join in the fun.
In the case of XTRA ACME USA, the friends who drop by to play and sing and mix come from every corner of the musical globe. Everyone from Kool Keith/Prince Paul collaborator Dan the Automator, who provides a mean remix of "Lovin' Machine," to 92-year-old drum and fife man Othar Turner, who guests on a Calvin Johnson remix of "Calvin," stops by for this Spencer collection. While there are unique tracks like "Electricity," a borderline oi! punk tune, the album is certainly not void of stirring straightforward Blues Explosions songs, such as the soulful "Magical Colors (31 Flavors)" and the gritty "Bacon."
