I had this horrible awful dream the other night that someone took the two of the greatest X-Men storylines of all time and reduced it to a terrifyingly bad encapsuliation, written and performed about as ineptly as anyone could ever imagine. Unfortunately this dream turned out to be real. And the more I thought about this film, the more upset I became. This is just an awful AWFUL film that, for some inexplicable reason, people continue to defend by saying "At least it was entertaining!". This jerkwad excuse does NOT work. There is very little fun and almost nothing funny about this film. It works hard to hold your interest but fails miserably. I do not actually blame Brett Ratner so much for this failure as much as I do the writers, Simon Kinberg and Zak Penn. They have little-to-no respect for the source materiel and even less for the characters. What's even worse is the performances in this film. Halle Berry couldn't be more wooden if she had roots firmly planted in the ground. Hugh Jackman... when did Wolverine become such a wuss-bag? When have we EVER seen Logan shed a tear in the comic? If you've found it, you're more of a fan than I. Hugh Jackman seems to want to turn Logan into the Melancholy Dane. And it works not one bit. The only outstanding performer in this film really is Sir Ian. McKellen is one of the greatest actors to have ever lived and he continues his great work here. Kelsey Grammer as Henry "Beast" McCoy also is quite good, because his performance is one done with great affection for the character. I don't know if the direction that they decided to go with for the creation of The Phoenix is interesting or absurd. It does fit in with more of the "real world" stuff that they're looking to do (having Phoenix be a repressed dominant personality rather than a cosmic lifeforce is definitely more realistic, but this is a COMIC BOOK ADAPTATION...). Anna Paquin, who has been my least favorite character of the entire series, not that I disliked Rogue, but Paquin ALWAYS seems to be on the verge of tears. Rogue was someone in the comics, who, at times, revelled in her power, whereas Paquin's Rogue is sooooo incredibly saddened by her abilities (understandably, but COME ON... let her have some FUN once in a great while) that we're meant to empathize with her ultimate decision, which is also something that really bothered me. Most people in this film are just wasted... none more so than James Marsden aka Cyclops. His character is given the WORST of the fates in store for the mutant heroes, and no respect is given to him other that a passing moment at the end. That was the worst part for me because Cyclops was always my favorite X-Man, and his treatment in all of the films (worst of all this film) is upsetting to say the least. For the better part of the first decade that X-MEN was in print, the main focus of the group was Cyclops, even though they did have the foresight to have the team have an actual TEAM dynamic, as opposed to this film where it seems it's Wolverine vs. the world. It ranks amongst BATMAN AND ROBIN, ELEKTRA, and LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN as one of the worst comic book films ever made, and I recommend to read the comics and skip this film entirely.

  X-Men's Blue Furry Beast....
Review created: 04/22/07
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

X-Men's Blue Furry Beast.... Was Played by Kelsey Grammer in the X-Men 3 Movie....

..and I enjoyed his portrayal of the Beast in that movie.

In that third movie of the X-Men Trilogy, Dr Henry 'Hank' McCoy is a former student of Professor Xavier's School who is now the Secretary of Mutant Affairs in the U.S. government.

This version of the Beast is covered in blue fur and has a genius level I.Q., with heightened strength and agility. However when the Beast first appeared in X-Men #1 way back in 1963 he did not sport the blue furry look. That came into being during the 1970's.

I grew up with the non-furry look and prefer that look in the comics. However in my opinion the producers of the movie couldn't have done any better than in getting Kelsey Grammer to portray the blue furry Beast in the movie!

The Beast has also been a member of the Avengers, X-Factor, and the Defenders, all Marvel Comics superhero teams, as well as the Uncanny X-Men through the years.

The Beast was a Great Addition to this third movie of the trilogy!

Recommended Viewing!

Michael

Wasn't The Best, But Great Movie For X-Men Fans

I am a fan of X-Men, my husband is not. I enjoyed the movie, he didn't. He just didn't "get it".

In order to completely understand the third movie in the X-Men saga, you really should watch the first two....otherwise, you might be a little lost.

I found the special effects to be excellent, especially the Jean scene in her childhood home....amazing and intense! The addition of Kelsey Grammar as the buff and intelligent Beast, gives a refreshing spin on the same ole gang. Grammar gives a top notch performance, Jackman is still sexy as ever and Berry is always smoking hot!

The movie is definitely worth buying and watching again and again. RIP Professor!

  A good, Fun movie.

This sequel was MUCH better than the last.

The addition of other main characters (i.e. Beast, etc) was a nice tie into the comic book. The original gang (actors) seemed to settle into their roles and didn't tend to OVERACT like in the other two films. The costumes and hairstyles also seemed more "realistic" than in the previous films.

In addition, this movie had a great storyline. This film really brought things together - good vs. bad, idealism vs. realism. This is by far the best script of the series. This movie plays a lot on the audiences emotions.

There were a few unexpected events and twists that separates this movie from other "comics to big screen" movies. This movie is definitely worth the time to watch.

I was a fan of the first 2 movies and was really hoping for alot from the third. However in this installment they had to change directors because the original director of 1 and 2 was doing the superman movie. Unfortunately it wasn't a change for the better. Theres alot of action in this installment but I'd rather have a really good story line and half as many special effects. Not recommended at all, especially if you're a fan of the comics.

Are They Diseased and Need a Cure?
Review created: 10/18/06(updated 10/27/06)

This is a good movie. Sometimes the special effects are a little over the top. Watch for the cameo of Stan Lee comic book icon at the start of the movie. He is the older man holding the garden hose when the water flys up. The cast is great. Sometimes is hard to recognize them with the make-up on. Kelsey Grammar is under the blue skin and fur of the Beast.

A mutant with the power to turn off the ability or traits of the mutants. He is a young child with no control of his ability. He provides the source of the cure.

The central point of this movie the the ethical question should the mutants be cured. Do they need to be cured? Is it right to use the cure as a weapon? Should mutants be allowed to receive treatment and become normal humans? They are good questions. The answers are not cut and dried.

The DVD contains two alternative endings. I was not impressed with these alternative. They are a number of extended or deleted scenes. Some of them are not that great to watch. There was a good reason for them being cut. The are extras are interesting. This a great wrap up to the trilogy of movies. It is of course open ended. There is the chance that another movie will be made.

I would say this film is a definite must see. It has all the good stuff, love, sacrifice, heartache, tears, and just what society fears more than anything else! a beautiful, demur, out of control woman who is literally capable of dissolving the known universe! who of course must in the end die.

Overall this was a great movie. Awesome special effects and action sequences. All the new character additions were great as well.

The storyline seemed to be lacking somewhat though, I wish they had developed it a bit more. I was disappointed to see that one of my favorite characters, Nightcrawler, was not in this movie. I was really looking forward to seeing him again.

But other than that it was great. We get to see Storm do a lot more damage in this movie, which is great, I'm glad she was put in the spotlight.

Be sure to watch a short scene after the credits. You won't want to miss it!

I only got in to these X-Men movies because I have three sons. The boys have also familiarized me with the various super heros and villains, however I don't read the comics so I don't see what others see regarding the plot not matching the comics. I like the movie, thought it had good action and good special effects. I'm sorry I didn't watch the surprise ending after the credts though....guess I'm gonna have to watch it again!

Decent Action, But Some Will be Dissapointed...
Review created: 10/10/06
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The Director Brian Singer took off to do SuperMan Returns and so Brett Ratner or something took over for this final installment...
It is pretty impossible to make one of the biggest comics of all time into a movie that everyone dislikes, but sadly Retner does a pretty good job.
On the action and visual effects side the movie is great. If that's all you want to go see a movie for you should love it. With Mystiques awesome scenes of her kicking some security guard butt, and a dramatic repositioning of the golden gate bridge, along with the Mutant vs. Humans final stand you should be able to keep those adrenaline levels up and enjoy the film.
But for longtime Comic Book fans or Analytical movie watchers, X-Men The Last Stand might not be that great for you.
The movie fails to dive into the plot of moral and ethical issues that lie between mutants and humans. The movie is pretty black and white and depicts the X-Men as the good guys and Magneto and his Mutants the bad guys. When in reality, you want to root for the mutants because it is the Humans who view the mutants as a disease and want to "cure" them all.
Also, the dialogue is not nearly as strong as it has been in the previous 2 movies.
Anyways, on a purely cinematic value the movie is not that bad and it is worth watching but if you know the storyline behind X-Men and enjoy deeper plots you might not have the best experience.

Well, hope this helps...
Aloha,
Trent McKell

ATTENTION!!!! WATCH THE MOVIE AFTER THE CREDITS ARE COMPLETELY OVER FOR A SHORT SEQUENCE WHICH YOU WONT WANT TO MISS!!!

Just Bought the DVD and it is loaded with extras 3 different alternative endings to view, I love all the X mean Movies and this one is no expection, of course the ending is left open for yet another one. As they are not many of the mutants left now, I hope they can continue with more story lines. It is a must see if you are a fan of Xmen and the killing off of 2 major charaters we'll I guess it had to happen sooner or later.

Plenty of Action~Some Unexpected Twists~Good Flick

This the third and final (at least that's what the actors keep saying) installment of the X-men movies brings a conclusion to the "war" between humans and mankind. I missed it in the theaters, so I had to wait for the DVD.

"Last Stand" draws upon the characters that have been developed during the first two movies and adds knew mutants to the mix. And of course, we learn the fate of Dr. Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) who apparently died at the conclusion of episode 2. Again, it's man against the mutants; an allegory to the real world problems of different cultures being forced to live together in harmony.

I don't want to give anything away, but this explosive movie is a must see if you've seen the first two installments!

  FULL OF ACTION

Just like the rest of the series, this episode is full of edge of your seat action and suspense. The CGI effects are first rate and the story keeps moving fairly well. My only complaint would be the time that was spent on the introduction of the new characters. All things considered, this is a great movie that will keep you interested all the way through to the end.

9 out of 10

  Stand Tall!
Review created: 10/03/06(updated 10/06/06)

2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Comic book fans- more specifically, super hero buffs- owe a lot to the X-Men Franchise. The first X-Men movie was THE film that put super heroes on Hollywood’s radar and jumpstarted the current comic-book-to-film trend. And "X2: X-Men United" kept the momentum going with a sequel that actually surpassed the original- A trick that very few sequels have accomplished (“Hello 'Empire Strikes Back' and 'Spiderman 2'!”).

That being said, "X-Men: The Last Stand" had a lot to live up to…
Fortunately, even with an ensemble cast of characters that has grown too large to properly manage within two-hours, Director Brett Ratner (replacing Bryan Singer, who left the franchise to direct "Superman Returns") delivers an excellent action movie that doesn’t skimp on story.

The action is non-stop and every character has an opportunity to show-off their awesome powers. And the good mutants vs. evil mutants “last stand” on Alcatraz Island is extremely satisfying!

My only issue with the movie- considering this is supposed to be the last installment of the series- is that the Jean Grey (Phoenix)/Scott Summers (Cyclops) reunion isn’t properly resolved.

DVD is truly the best format for this film. It actually gets better with repeat viewings. It’s fun to go back and catch all the special effects that sped past the screen during previous viewings. And without giving away a significant spoiler, upon second viewing, the relevance of a seemingly throw-away line by Prof. Xavier to his class became glaringly clear in the final scene following the credits (For further clarification, check out my blog, "Comic Book Ramblings" by copying the following address into your address bar: http://blogs.ebay.com/bmbcomics/entry/X-Men-The-Last-Stand-DVD-Ah-ha-Now-it-makes-se/_W0QQidZ26007018).

With the X-Family grown out-of-control, it’s no wonder the film’s producers have decided to shelve the X-Men story while focusing on Wolverine and Magneto solo spin-off films. Still, "X-Men: The Last Stand" was fun enough that I hope the producers haven’t truly taken the film’s title literally.

For a package consisting of a single disc, there are plenty of DVD extras. Don’t be fooled by the “Join The Brotherhood” or “Take A Stand” choices when the menu first loads. Each choice (with different background graphics) takes you through the same menu options. The extended, deleted and alternate scenes are interesting, but it’s the commentaries that are always the selling point for me when buying a DVD. Along with two commentaries for the feature, there is also a commentary track to go along with the scenes not used in the theatrical release.

*The only Easter Egg I found can be accessed in the “Deleted Scenes” section.
To access:
1. From the Main Menu, click on “Features”
2. From the Features Menu, click on “Deleted Scenes”
3. From the “Deleted Scenes" Menu, click on “More” three times
4. Click the up arrow of your DVD player until either the Brotherhood or X symbol is highlighted in the upper left corner.
5. Click on the symbol, then click on “Play” to view a neat visual effects clip of the X-Plane.

Now, this is one great movie and that says alot coming from me because I am not into Sci-Fi Fanasty movies. I purchased this movie for my kids, and my husband because they wanted to see it so I had to sit down with them, and watch it until then I had never watched an X-Men movie before and to my surprise I really enjoyed the movie. It is definitely an action packed movie, and if you enjoy alot of action then this is the movie for you. I had never watched an X-Men movie before in my-life until this one, and now I own the first, and second movie also. I have to give this a 5 star rating out of 5.

Action Packed and Fun - Nice Addition To The X-Men Saga
Review created: 10/26/06

The X-Men movies are fun and action-packed and this 3rd installment is no exception. To me it felt more like a horror movie than the others, but it was surprisingly good for a #3 movie. Some trilogies can get old and tired by the 3rd movie, but this keeps up the pace and is very entertaining. It is worth a watch and provides for a fun evening in front of the t.v.

I disagree with the movie being a waste of money and talent. I loved Kelsey Grammer in this. SInce I watched this movie, I went and watched Fraiser. The guy is amaing. The movie was fantastic. Although my favorite was the second one, this movie still rocked. Its worth every penny. Believe me, its not a waste of talent or anthing else for that matter.

I really liked this movie! I couldn't wait for it to come out. It has alot of great action. Keeps you on the edge of your seat! EXCITING in capital letters! Special effect were right on! The only thing that disappointed me was the killing off of major characters, from the very first, right off they start killing off the X-MEN! One or two,ok, but almost all of the cast! Hello! Hopefully whats left of the original cast will make another X-MEN Movie. Even with that, I loved the movie and thought it was great! I bought it so I can watch it again....

I have seen all the Xmen movies. I didnt like the xmen at all until I saw the first movie. I didnt think that the last stand was as exciting as the first 2 movies. I did enjoy the special effects. However I was disappointed about the proffessor getting blown up, jean being evil, and her dying again in the end. I loved her character. It was still a good movie. You have to watch the first 2 xmen first though or else you will be completly lost. Lets hope for a fourth!

I loved X-Men as a child. I collected X-Men comics so naturally I had great expectations for the movie. While I did see the first two of the trilogy I liked the third the best. It completely went places that I never expected to go. Although it was different than any of the comic storylines I really enjoyed it. Jean Grey was one of my favorite characters from the comic it was quite suprising what turns the movie did to her character. Professor X of course--Patrick Stewart was excellent..He fits exactly what I would have imagined Prof X would have looked like! If you liked the first two movies...you'll love the THIRD!!!
