Synopsis
The trumpeter Wynton Marsalis has been a tireless advocate of all things jazz for most of his career, from his start with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers to his involvement with New York's Jazz at Lincoln Center project. His advocacy of somewhat conservative jazz over more experimental forms has generated controversy, particularly with some of the higher profile exponents of those forms, like the late Miles Davis, with whom he had several well-publicized arguments. But Leslie Gourse's biography, which traces the trumpeter's career from his New Orleans roots to his studies at Juilliard and his apprenticeship in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and beyond, goes beyond received opinions to reveal a man who, though very much obsessed with his music, devotes equally as much energy to encouraging his fellow artists and promoting the public's awareness of jazz. With interviews with his family and many of his contemporaries, as well as full cooperation from Marsalis himself, the authoritative SKAIN'S DOMAIN is the first full-length biography of this talented and controversial figure who has done much to revive the fortunes of what was becoming considered an outdated art form.

Industry Reviews
"Leslie Gourse's industrious, briskly written biography offers a charitable but clear-eyed history of the trumpeter Wynton Marsalis as man, musician and opinionated, sometimes willfully abrasive evangelist of classic jazz....Gourse explores his curious dismissal of fusion and avant-garde music....She also depicts the private Marsalis--the father of three sons, the dutiful son, the loving sibling to an autistic brother-- with narrative portraits that soften Marsalis's dogmatic image."
