This book was referred to me by one of my Professors in a Journalism program. I was so used to pulling BS easily in the past, but they were able to call me out on all of my attempts to pad my essays. I asked them for more advice on how to be successful in the academic program as well as on the field. That is when I was made aware of this book: On Writing Well by William Zinsser.

It is perfect for learning how to not just use the inverted triangle as a Writer, but also to remember that everyone is a reader and when we read items, we usually hope that the author gets straight to the point. It is very much about the simple ways to communicate effectively. I would re-recommend this book to anyone who struggles with writing or someone who is so used to the 5-paragraph expository essay that she cannot fathom applying all of her significant information (who, what, where, when, why, and how) into the initial paragraph of an assignment--let alone a proposed article to a major publication.

  It's Not Just About Writing

After three pages, I was hooked.

This book was referenced to me by a pastor friend who said it changed his preaching. I didn't quite understand how a writing book could change a person's preaching, but I purchased it anyway. "On Writing Well" is fantastic for improving your writing no matter what you are doing. Whether you are writing emails, company memos, or a personal memoir, if you follow the simple guidelines he provides, your writing WILL improve. Best part is, he will not only tell you how to improve your writing, but you will see a living example in how he writes. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to improve the quality of their writing as well as improving their thought process when it comes to organizing information. I personally have recommended this book to many of my friends and have been getting great feedback from them as well.

Now get out there and start writing well!

  An Essential Writing Book

This book is one of the most important books any writer can own, along with The Elements of Style. You may not refer to this one as often as Strunk and White, but you should definitely read it carefully, and reread it every year if not more often, to imprint on your brain not only what Zinsser says, but how he says it and what it means.

  good book
Review created: 10/07/09

This book was required by my Creative Writing teacher for college. Even though I have been reading it in order, it isn't necessary, and one could flip to the chapter that pertains to what they are writing about. Like the advice in memoir section. A good book to give ideas on writing, just don't take follow it 100%.

Had to buy it for school and it helps you think about things differently than you would normally. As far as a school book goes it's a very good book.

I am attending a doctorate program and was having difficulty with writing course papers. I purchased this book and it really helped with my ability to get my ideas on paper. Also, this book has examples and clear descriptions, which made for "easy" reading.

New writers, take it with a grain of salt
Review created: 02/09/08

"On Writing Well" is directed toward men and women who have been writing things for other people for so long that they have lost their "soul," their identity, their voice. It tells readers to write for yourself and not be concerned about what others will think. I got this book for a college writing class and my professor warns us to take the book's advice with a grain of salt, because as college students and as people newly entering the work force, we DO need to be thinking, a lot, about what our readers want.

But aside from taking that into consideration, this book is really good. It addresses how we should take out unnecessary stuff in our papers to make our writing more concise and to the point. The two major things a writer needs to remember are style and clarity, and Zinsser goes into detail about how to put those two things into your writing. I would recommend this book for any writer.

  Great books, and enjoy it.

The books I purchased on ebay are On Writing Well, and the Name of Rose, which are really great books. On Writing Well is not a boring book only tells you how to write, oppositely, it's a easy-to-read and easy-to-understand book with some humors from the author. The Name of Rose is quite religiously-related book, not bad, have to read more than 2 times.
