As a freelance writer and editor, I find that getting started is often the hardest part. In attempting my first novel, I have found this to be even more true.
Most writers are creative--that's not the problem. The trouble starts when we try to be more pragmatic about writing, not more creative. Where do I begin? How do I create compelling characters? What type of novel really sells? How should I pace my novel?
I've read a few "how to" books on writing fiction, and this one is by far the best. Maass gives step-by-step directions, including bulleted points at the end of each chapter, on character development, uncovering a compelling storyline (and developing it), serial fiction, fantasy fiction...everything you can think of in piecing your novel together. It's an easy read, but take your time on each chapter. They're all thought-provoking.
For a creative but highly disorganized mind like mine, I would recommend this book. I checked it out of the library initially, then decided to buy a copy so that I could mark it up and highlight the points I tend to have the most trouble with. Maass says there's room for everyone in the writing market--it may be (or seem to be) difficult to write a novel, but there is always room on the shelf for one more book. Maybe it will be yours. No, wait! It'll be mine. ;) Then yours...
Find a way to get your hands on this book...just a great, informative read all around.
