Album Notes I Write the Songs gathers into a box set the five single-disc albums that British label ASV/Living Era released of America's greatest pop songwriters, 1997's The Melody Lingers On (Irving Berlin), 2000s Anything Goes (Cole Porter), 2002's 'S Wonderful (George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin) and 2001's Till the Clouds Roll By (Jerome Kern) and With a Song in My Heart (Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart). The result is an impressive survey of the heart of the American Songbook, with original mono recordings done between 1924 and 1951 featuring some of the greatest singers and musicians of the pop and jazz side of the 20th century. Historic gems abound, from Bing Crosby's timeless version of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" to Paul Robeson's historic turn on Jerome Kern's "Ol' Man River," Frances Langford's take on Cole Porter's "I've Got You Under My Skin," Nat King Cole's elegant rendering of the Gershwins' "Embraceable You," and Sophie Tucker's saucy delivery of Rodgers & Hart's "The Lady Is a Tramp." Classic songs in classic versions. ~ Steve Leggett
