Industry Reviews For those to whom the ownership of multiple watches is still a novelty, British writer (and liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Watchmakers) Edwards pens his interesting historical account. Horological trivia are fascinating--for instance, that the illuminated face was born out of the army's need to tell time in the dark during World War II, or that a normal watch beats 10 times a second, 18,000 vibrations per hour, and 314 million ticks each year. Color photographs will help novice collectors identify a 'keeper,' though, unfortunately, the descriptions of the more than 50 watch manufacturers, from Audemars Piguet to Zodiac, are a bit too obsequious. The sumptuous full-color photographs are advertisement-quality, and sometimes the text reads like a sales catalog, although no prices are given. Still, there is enough information to spark interest in would-be collectors, and a helpful glossary will help those researching single pieces they inherited. Annotation copyright H.W. Wilson Company.
