Wrinkles are distinguishing on other people.

Over the years my mirror has slowly become defective. When I glance into the mirror, the image reflected now places wobbly marks on my face and most other places that the mirror cares to reflect. Oh? This is a different type of wrinkle? Hum. Ah, yes!

“A Wrinkle in Time” by Madeleine L'Engle (1994) is a delightful, wrinkly mystery web just waiting to trap your interests withing the covers of this 211-page, award-winning book.

I was trapped by this mystery while substituting at a middle school. The teacher had left instructions to continue reading on page 7. What about the first six pages? I was not going to be left in the dark so I quickly read the first six. By the end of the allotted reading period, I was hooked – or stuck – in the mystery web.

A few weeks later, still wondering just what was going to happen, I searched the web for the “new” price. Now armed with better knowledge, I went onto eBay and searched. I located a “lightly used” copy. Considering the shipping and handling, the actual cost delivered to my door was an attractive price. So I bid and waited.

An email screamed out at me YOU ARE A WINNER! Okay, it did say something different, but that was the way I felt. A few days after payment by PayPal, the book arrived.

Trembling – perhaps a function of having wrinkles? – I opened the secure packaging to find a truly “lightly used” copy with a decent cover and no marks within the book itself.

Over the next week, I slipped this novel into my scanty reading time. Spellbound, I was pulled deeper into the mystery with each page I turned. Artfully-crafted twists in the plot only pulled me deeper.

When I was on the final pages, I began the separation blues – regretting the story was drawing to its surprising conclusion. There was some good news following the 211 pages of story. There was a brief introduction to other books that would continue the adventures of these youthful heroes.

Ah, time to do another search and look for value on eBay. Of course, I will check the person who sold this copy first and then onto the anticipated journey through web-based and then eBay searches.

Respectfully written and enjoyed by gentleguyofpa.

  A Wrinkle in Time

"A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeleine L'Engle is a truly great classic children's book and one of the best chapter books of the 20th century. Its literature awards include Newbery medal. The main characters of the story are three children: Meg Murray, her brilliant younger brother Charles Wallace, and her friend Calvin. They travel through time and space to rescue Meg's father, who is held prisoner by dark forces on the planet of Camazotz. "A Wrinkle in Time" is a good read aloud book. Children in 4th grade through 7th grade can learn about the battle between good and evil and the power of love from this science fiction and fantasy book.

A Fictional but Fun adventure in science
Review created: 10/16/09

A wrinkle in Time was one of my favorite books as a child. As a parent, I bought the book to share with my own children who are at reading age now. We've begun reading it together which makes for a fun and fictional new world to explore with them! The book is written in such a way that any child with an imagination would find fun and drama in it. Although I do stress it is purely fictional, the possibilites of the science side of it will bring loads of questions from your children as it does mine, which in turn opens up an eagerness to learn more about science, astronomy and it's studies! All in all, it's been a great and fun adventure for each of us!

A great storyline with some actual science in it. A thinking child's work of fiction. You will find space travel, otherworldly creatures, evil to be defeated, and measures of stellar distances.

I bought several copies of this book for listening center activities in my classroom. My advanced fifth graders love the complexity of the plot and have had success with independent literature circle discussions using this book.

Wonderful writing, easy to read, and spurs on the imagination. Great for all family members. And there are more to the series, if you like the first one...
