Yet Another Lesson For Todays Gutless Democracies.

Greetings Dear Reader,

This TV series, it must be said, admits it's own limitations....primarily how can an entire World War be compressed into 26 hours of documentary television. Mr.Jeremy Isaccs, the series producer, confirms as much. For what it's worth though, it succeeds in presenting the program's stated objectives.

However the World At War must never be viewed as authoritative or comprehensive historical fact.

It is far from the whole truth, or even partial truth. There are no outright lies or gross inaccuracies, but the viewer must not be satisfied that this is the history of WW2.

It is a program heavily "Euro-centric" in it's scope & what little detail it presents.

The Pacific, South East Asian and North African theatres of conflict are hardly covered to say the least. Detail on what is covered is scant and generalised. The efforts of individuals, particular military units & formations are all but ignored.

The effect of one action or battle, for example, on the conduct of the next action or battle or indeed the war as a whole is completely ignored. These are just some of the many failings of the World At War series.

The barbarity of the Japanese militarist expansion and the courage, endurance & sacrifice of Aussies, Yanks & their Allies who defeated the Japs is all but ignored.

The significance of this as a presentation of WW2 history is a dramatic, indeed unforgivable, failing on the part of the producers of World At War series.

For the new viewer, the current generation who remain all but ignorant of WW2, they will not comprehend the brutality & insanity of the Japanese regime, military & general population, a brutality that would have embarrassed even the German Nazis.

To ignore this immense scope of WW2, relegates World At War to being predominately a worthwhile visual compilation of WW2 and not a worthwhile historical documentary.

The program brings together a great deal of film footage that, if viewed along with an individual's personal studies on the subject matter, provides benefits for the viewer or student.

The Great Generation of English Speaking men & women - Australians, New Zealanders, Canadians, Americans, South Africans & Indians, along with the great Russian peoples - who fought and defeated the hell-on-earth that insane Germans, Italians, Vichy French, Japanese and their collaborators unleashed,.....that Great Generation is rapidly passing into history.

Along with the Great Generation goes their knowledge, experience, courage and endurance. Their deeds & heroism will never be excelled. Their sacrifice will never be equaled. They are immortal. We Will Remember Them, Lest We Forget.

Thank you Dear Reader for your consideration.

BEST of the World War 2 collections~
Review created: 02/25/08(updated 04/26/08)

Sir Laurence Olivier narrates this 26 hour history of WW2. Add interviews with British, American, German and Japanese Soldiers. Made in 1973. What I like are THE interviews where the actual soldiers or civilians talk about what occured through their own eyes because they experienced it~ great video and it takes the War from the Nazi build up the Blitz to Pearl Harbor to the End. more than just bombs flying we see the devastating results of the bombs landing. Albert Speer was alive and talks from the German perspective which is very interesting~

THIS IS ONE YOU WILL WATCH OVER AND OVER~excellent~

I give it a solid 10 out of 10.

IF YOU FOUND THIS REVIEW HELPFUL PLEASE REMEMBER TO VOTE~

The Best War Series in the History of Television.
Review created: 01/04/07

I have watched many a War story and let me tell you nothing comes close to this true jewel of television history. If you think you know all there is to know about WW2 and have not seen this series you are truly missing something.
This series hits on all points of view. Yes there are many unbelievable, if not unforgettable, rarely seen images of war. Many of which are graphic in nature and emotion. Those images, coupled with the unwavering and masterful commentary of Laurence Olivier, guide you along the path of this very robust collection.
Its hard to even describe the depth of scope this series covers. Through each examination of combatant nations you see and feel what each country felt, desired, and believed. You almost can't help but feel compassion for all sides when you see what tremendous perils and losses every nation had to endure.
There are a lot of "cookie cutter" WW2 documentaries out there, but this series takes no shortcuts. This series shows a bluntly honest and true description of the most important war in the World's history. If you are looking for The standard in all war documentaries, let alone WW2, this is the series to own.

This 11-DVD set includes the 26 episodes from the original 1973 TV series, plus the following valuable programs:

* The Making of the Series.
* Hitler's Germany: a two-part documentary on life in Germany from 1933-1945.
The Two Deaths of Adolph Hitler: the question as to whether Hitler shot himself to death or took poison.
* Secretary to Hitler: a 20-minute interview with Traudl Junge, Hitler's secretary from 1943 until the end. (Her story is also portrayed in Oliver Hirschbiegel's stunning 2005 film Downfall.)
* Warrior: Film footage of battle and carnage with the voice-overs of American and British soldiers remembering their experiences.
* From War to Peace: a 20-minute interview with historian Stephen Ambrose (with very long hair back in the mid-70s!) about the post-war period in Europe and America.
* The Final Solution: a two-part documentary on the death camps, the survivors, and the Nazi mindset towards the genocide.
* Making the Series: A 30th Anniversary Retrospective.
* Experiences of War.

34 hours of WWII footage is awesome! I consider myself to have a more than average knowledge about the great war and still I saw footage i've never seen before. It's a great item to have in a personal book collection about the subject.

It makes you see the war trough the firt-hand eyes who lived it, they are telling things that historians cannot tell. It is also tells a lot about documentary and cinematographic techniques of the seventies.

The whole package is excellent. Better than I remember it as a kid. The bonus features are a great asset to the overall package, however they aren't narated by Lawrence Olivier.

This 11 DVD set contains 26 episodes and is still considered the best and most thorough set on world war 2 there is. The many interviews and large amount of actual footage makes this set the most complete history you can purchase in a set.

I first saw this series in the 1960s as a boy. Anyone interested the history of WWII should acquire this series. Sir Lawrence Olivier's narration is quite moving and the footage is superb. Watch this series prior to the upcoming Ken Burns' documentary on WWII. It presents the war in its true light as a grim and dogged event which claimed the lives of millions of innocent people. It pulls no punches. WWII was the central event of the 20th Century. It shaped the world as we know it today. In addition, this series should leave us with immeasurable esteem for the "greatest generation" who, in their frail eighties, deserve our graditude and our respect. If you should meet a WWII vet, thank him/her for preserving our way of life which most of us take for granted. Gary A. Lehner

This is by far the best documentary on World War II. With all original footage and first person interviews. Very few reenactments. What few there are, were done by the allies or axis themselves.

I really liked the way it was put together, but some of the same footage and interviews were used in several of the dvd's. I think you could get the same story in a smaller collection of World at War videos.
There was lots of video footage that I hadn't seen before, and my favorite tv channel is the History channel !!! So that was a pleasant surprise! If you're looking for a very well done history of World War 2, you wont be dissapointed! I think this should be shown in high school history courses.

I remember this series from many years ago. I could hardly wait for each week's episode. I saw it advertised on TV but only a few episodes were offered. I started to search for the complete series and found some at quite a high price. Just then it occurred to me to check out availability on ebay. I found just what I wanted, the entire series for less than half what others were charging. The series is the best documentry on the defining event of the 20th century. Many of those who participated in the making of the series are gone now and as we age there will be fewer people alive who actually lived through those times. This program will help future generations understand that time and its importance to civilization.

This was a great collection of the 1970's program. I use to watch them on tv when I was young.Brought back good memories. The film clips and interviews have withstood time unbelievably well. It was fasinateing to see people who were actually in the war being interviewed. The biggest knowwing that most of these people have probably past away since.I bought it becuase I always remember it being a great documentary. It has not lost it's luster after all these years.A must have for anyone interested in world war two.

This documentary set the pace from the get go. I was a boy when it played in the 70's, and I am still a WW2 history buff. Even until this day I yet to find a documentary that covers the War as this one does.

  World at War DVD Set

The World at War by Thames Television Network was and is one of the best documentaries made on the Second World War. The newsreel film footages and interviews with chief personalities of the time are very good. As with most British made documentaries there tends, at times, to be a bit too much British opinion and somewhat stilted views concerning American motives, military methods and political processes.
Very few British historians really understand American ways of thinking and reacting to certain situations. But these are at a minimum in this collection and it maintains its credibility by holding up well its presentation thiry plus years after being produced. Well worth the time to watch!

Far better than Ken Burns for understanding history
Review created: 12/04/07
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Although I thought that Ken Burns' The War was excellent oral history of the experiences of soldiers and civilians, it was exceedingly weak in presenting the march of events and the political and economic forces at work. Burns leaves one with very little understanding of the lessons of history other than "war is hell". This BBC World at War series from the 1970's, on the other hand, is absolutely outstanding in presenting the history of the war (and including many first hand accounts of soldiers and civilians as well). I think that it is the best, most comprehensive, thoughtful, and engaged documentary about WW II that has yet been made.

This collection begins with Hitler's early life and his family. And ends with the Fall of the Third Reich. Nothing is omitted. It is a real sobering history lesson. Hopefully, we have learned from this era and will not allow it to be repeated. These DVDs were brand new and I'm an so very pleased with them.

  Worthwhile collection

I bought this for my husband who already had several dvd and vhs on World War II. He has watch many TV.

He said this collection had many pieces and film clips he had never seen. The picture clarity is very good. He is very please with the set.

It is a very comphensive set. It starts polictics that led to the war, the War in Europe before US became involved and the war through to the end. It has quite a bit of color footage. I found the disc on the invents before and after Germany invaded France very interesting. I knew they had relied too on the Maginot Line. I did not realized how badly everything was mismanaged by the military, Also, that there was not consist strong government in France to get the country organized for the eminent threat from Germany.

If you are interested in War World II history this is an excellent collection.

Still the standard for WWII documentaries! If you liked "The War" by Ken Burns or "WWII in HD" on History Channel, you'll love "The World at War". Thorough, detailed, complete! Added bonus...the haunting narrative voice of Lawrence Olivier.
