Movie Description
The events of September 11 left an indelible mark on most Americans, and certainly on those in the New York City area. Yet as fresh as the images seem, it's easy to forget the actual grit, sacrifice, and uncertainty of that day. Director Oliver Stone captures the essence of 9/11 by focusing on the true story of two Port Authority Police Department officers who were trapped beneath the wreckage of the fallen World Trade Center.


Veteran officer Sergeant John McLoughlin (Nicholas Cage) and his team, including rookie Will Jimeno (Michael Pena) are gathering equipment to enter the burning Twin Towers when the concourse comes crashing down around them. Twenty feet below the surface, pinned by debris and unable to reach anyone by radio, the officers must rely on their own will--and on each other--to survive. Above ground, their families watch the towers fall, uncertain whether or not McLoughlin and Jimeno are there, since they are normally assigned to the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Like so many that day, Donna McLoughlin (Maria Bello) and Allison Jimeno (Maggie Gyllenhaal) wait for news at home surrounded by their families, fearing the worst and praying for the best. Stone's film depicts the horror and heartbreak of the victims, survivors, and their families with an understated, subtle touch. From the ash and dust covering everyone and everything to the dazed expressions of the workers leaving the towers to the steaming twisted metal remains of the World Trade Center, attention to detail is exceedingly realistic. Rather than being political or sensationalistic, this is a film about everyday heroes--men and women doing their best in the face of an unspeakable event. It may be just one story of many from September 11, but it represents the efforts, emotions, and reactions of so many on that fateful day.

    World Trade Center

    If you see one movie this year...

    ... Make it WORLD TRADE CENTER!

    Going into it I expected WTC to be pretty good, what I didn't expect was one of the most powerful and heart-warming movies I'd ever seen. This movie tugs on every emotional string in your body, and when you think there's nothing left to tug on, it tugs some more.

    The emotion, the intensity, and the cinematography are absolutely breathtaking. Nicolas Cage and Michael Pena put on an Oscar worthy performance, and the supporting cast does a superb job as well.

    I can't say anything bad about this film, but I offer this warning: World Trade Center will have you in tears or close to it from beginning to end.

    For as long as I remember there are certain movies that have inspired me, World Trade Center touched my heart, and I only hope that movies like this don't have to be based on true stories anymore.

    Final Verdict:

    5/5

    Rent or Buy?: Quite possibly the movie of the year. I am going to buy this movie as soon as possible, I recommend you do the same.

    This was a very emotional movie to watch for us. Living so close to NYC and having had family members (Port Authority Officers) there on 9/11 made reliving that day hard.

    Just as in the movie, many families like ours and the families of McLoughlin & Jimeno were uncertain at first whether or not our loved ones were inside when the towers collapsed. The movie portrays the same feelings of fear, disbelief, prayer and anger as we all felt through the hours we waited to hear if they were all alive. McLoughlin and Jimeno made it out alive as did our three family members - we were blessed.

    The movie shows just this small storyline of the overall events of that day but brings to light the feelings of the victims, survivors, families and everyone glued to their TV. This movie is one that you both don't want to see but at the same time know that you need to see it. Set aside plenty of time because you may need to pause the movie to be able to wipe your tears before you can continue to watch it.
