Women & Money is an easy to read book written for those of us who aren't necessarily financially saavy. Ms. Orman explains the principles of sound financial planning in an easy to understand and engaging manner. She breaks it down, chapter by chapter, into manageable steps to take. Don't get me wrong, this book goes well beyond the basics, but it's presented in such a way that it's manageable and easily understood. What's unique about this book is its approach and perspective for women. It really made me rethink some of my previous notions regarding finances. For example, Ms. Orman suggests that NOT putting money away into our own personal retirement account is selfish! As women we tend to put others first, especially our families. It's hard for us to think about taking money from the family finances and putting it into an account just for us. The thought behind this is, if you can't afford to put the money aside now, how will you be able to afford it when you are no longer working and your income is reduced? Ms. Orman goes on to explain that doing without a little now is better for our family than having us dependent on them in our old age. After all, if we aren't set up for retirement, who's going to take care of us? Certainly not Social Security! Ms. Orman also encourages women to have accounts in their name alone. It's fine to have joint accounts with your husband/partner, however, you need to have your own personal accounts as well. In the event of a divorce or death, a woman who has established her own credit and financial security, independent of her husband, will be in a much stronger position financially. As an added bonus, TD Ameritrade is offering a fantastic incentive for readers of Women & Money. It's certainly an offer you shouldn't pass up! Review ID: 10000000003617729 Was this review helpful? I like the fact this book is geared to women because we do have the money concerns as men; but different life concerns that effect the way we think/behave when dealing with money. I really like the book and how it instructs someone to look at money with their heads and not always thier hearts. Review ID: 10000000003732831 Was this review helpful? It's worth the price just for the information about the money market account. Suze gives some really solid advice on setting your house in order and gives you the time frame in which to do it. She breaks it all down into steps so it is not too difficult or overwhelming. I believe this book can set your mind at ease, whether you are a woman or man, if you just follow her instructions. I highly recommend this book. It has my 18 year-old daughter already planning her financial future. Thanks to information like Suze's, my children can have a brighter future. Why didn't anyone teach us this stuff years ago? A must read! Review ID: 10000000003727193 Was this review helpful? I feel I can trust her advice. I have followed her advice in many aspects of my finances, and have not suffered from the recession as yet. Yes, I lost money on investments, but I have time for those investments to recover. I was reasonable well positioned prior to the downturn. Each chapter contains action steps to get the reader on firm financial footing. Highly recommneded. Review ID: 10000000012304875 Was this review helpful? I got it because I was having a midlife crisis and realized I have very little is in my name despite being married 20 years. I hadn't a clue of my credit score, FICO score, or anything about investing despite me doing the bill paying and saving. This book walks you step by step into learning about these things and keeps it simple enough to understand. Suze is very encouraging and understanding of the special situation women are in esp. now We are earning more money and yet still have the mentality of not holding property, bank accts. etc. Men do not get it because always the financial side has been in their favor and/or we assume they know about this stuff when in reality they may not as I found out with my own husband. Don't rely on that man to take care of you. You need to take care of yourself even if just for a sense of security and pride. It isn't stingy, it is smart. Report this review Review created: 07/08/08 by: This book is EXCELLENT. Every woman should read it and take its advice to heart. Suze knows exactly what you are feeling and how it affects the way we treat money in our lives. If you want to retire someday, by a better house, save for coillege educations or just plain have more money and better credit, this is the book for you! Review ID: 10000000007883531 Was this review helpful? Report this review This book is a good overview for men and women alike. I bought copies for my sister and my daughter, and my dad has also read. Some of the information is not applicable to me personally, but the bottom line is that this book presents uncomplicated, common sense information. A quick and easy read, Women and Money demonstrates that its never too early or late to save and even the smallest amounts will pay off in the long run. Regardless of your investment risk tolerance, it's a very good guide that deals with not only investments, but other products such as wills, trusts, estates, etc. I also recommend buying a used book (sorry Suze) to save money and recycle to help save our environment.
