Women Who Love Too Much by Robin Norwood (1990, Paperback, Reissue)

There is so much to learn about addictive relationships and this is just a wonderful, easy to understand, revealing book! Even when we choose to stay in such relationships, isn't it better to know we are not "crazy" as some guys would have us believe? You ask if he loves you and he gives you, "Would I be here if I didn't love you!" Oh, boy, just what I want to hear...not!
So here's the test right from the book: "WHEN BEING IN LOVE MEANS
BEING IN PAIN....WHEN YOU KEEP WISHING AND HOPING HE'LL CHANGE"
The author raises the red flags on guys women choose, and who:
"Find themselves attracted to troubled, distant, moody men ~ dismiss "nice guys" as boring, Neglect their friends and interests to be available to him,
Tend to panic ~ think that time to find love is running out,
Feel empty without him, although being with him is torment..."

I like the way HOUSTON CHRONICLE put it into words ~

I checked this book out at my local library. The content is so emotionally deep and hit a lot of nerves so it took longer to read than usual for me. I kept re-checking it out and finally I realized that I needed to have this book permanently, so I ordered it on e-bay. I am really facing a lot of personal issues right now that the author of this book covers head on . I am glad that I have this in my permanent possession because it is a Godsend. When I read this book I was so enlightened about how my past is affecting my present and empowered by Dr. Norwood 's advice on how I can deal with this realization.

I saw myself all over those pages. The insight was very useful. I would read something and feel a lump in my throat and would want to put the book down. But the more I read, the easier it got.

I was always trying to change him or make his life better, sacrifice and suffer for him to prove my love and devotion. How frustrating. It is so exhilarating to finally excercise the power to effect change in my own life.

This book has been our "bible" at our abused women's shelter for nearly as long as it has been on the market. It seems to be the best way to explain to women why they keep going back. Women often need to leave about 7 times before they can finally emotionally detach enough to leave him. I do wish she had called it People Who Love Too Much because this relationship addiction can exist in all types of relationships...heterosexual, gay, platonic, friendships, family relationships and even in the workplace. I use this in my support group along with the Celestine Prophesy...The Experiential Guide, The Verbally Abusive Relationship book. I love how she talks about all of the attempt to hook someone back in as a "ping pong game" That says it all. And to disengage is to let the ball roll off the table and onto the floor. If you are even thinking about buying this book, do not hesitate, BUY IT NOW! This is one of the most helpful and straightforward books I have ever read regarding women who are in dysfunctional relationships. It is easy to understand and it is clear cut. This book will give you examples and references to things you may be doing or not doing that are contributing to the relationship problems. If you suffer from low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, attracting the wrong kind of men, YOU MUST get this book. It will change your life!

I have read this book before and I really enjoyed it because it deals with helping people who are in co-dependent relationships understand that they are not responsible for someone else. The must learn to care for themselves and break free of this cycle of dependency. A codependent person has been caring for others for so long that they ignore their own needs and remain in relationships that tend to be abusive (emotionally or physically) and it takes time to break from the cycle.

I decided to buy this book again after I had lent it out again and I saw the pattern of dependency begining again in a new relationship so I decided to re-read it. I also reccomend Letters from Women Who Love to Much.

My mother says it is very true and insightful. I got it for her as a gift and she says it is helping her understand why woman choose Love the way they do. She says she recommends it for all woman that have relationship troubles!

It is taking a little more time for me to read this book. The book was recommended by my instructer in the counseling field. I see myself in the pages as well and am going through the healing process. It is amazing how the book comes to life and touches areas of my heart where I did not know those feelings and emotions existed.

I am so grateful to have found out about this book and will recommend it to every woman that I know.
