  OLD MOVIE NITE!
Review created: 03/10/09
by:

THIS IS AN OLD BLACK AND WHITE MOVIE, I REMEMBER WATCHING IT ON TV, AND I LOVED IT, MY GRAND DAUGHTER WHO IS NOW IN COLLEGE LOVES OLD MOVIES AS WELL, SHE AND I WATCHED IT TOGETHER, THEN RENTED AND WATCHED THE NEW VERSION, AND BOTH DECIDED THE OLD VERSION WAS MUCH BETTER. SHE AND I ARE BOTH SCANNING EBAY EVERY DAY FOR DIFFERENT OLD MOVIES, AND THROUGH THE SUMMER PLAN AN OLD MOVIE DAY OR NITE EACH WEEK. IT IS GREAT TO HAVE THIS TIME WITH HER AND ALSO FOR HER TO SEE HOW GREAT SOME OF THE EARLIER MOVIE STARS WERE AND HOW WELL THEY COULD ACT. I LOVE THIS MOVIE, THE ACTRESSES WERE TERRIFIC WITHOUT BEING GROSS, IT IS FUNNY YET SAD IN PLACES WITHOUT BRINGING YOU DOWN. I RECOMMEND EVERYONE FIND SOME OF THE OLDER MOVIES AND MAKE A NITE OF IT, EBAY HAS SOME TERRIFIC BUYS ON OLD MOVIES THAT DON'T EMPTY THE POCKETBOOK, EVEN WITH SHIPPING I PAID LESS THAN GOING TO THE THEATER TO SEE THE NEW VERSION OF THIS MOVIE, AND SHARED IT WITH SOMEONE I LOVE IN A RELAXED HOME ATMOSPHERE!

  To the point

I saw the remake and wanted to compare the two. Says a lot about how far we have come as women! And about how far we still have to go. I much prefered the take on the remake where the women were supportive of each other rather than eager to tear each other down over men.

THE ORIGINAL 1939 version of current Meg Ryan flic!
Review created: 02/19/09
by:

After having seen the current Meg Ryan remake of this version (based on the broadway stage play)I was compelled to see this original film version. I did enjoy understanding MANY of the direct references of the current remake to this movie after having since this version. The changes really only in highlighting the modern take on the same story line. But the names and plots are essentially true to the original. The current '08 version maybe a little less over-the-top and less convoluted than this 1939 version plays. (And yet the current still manages to make the same point). Although, on one level, it is sad to see the story line still holds true though all this time. I imagine this was a very risque movie in its 1939 era. But it is a pleasure to watch this star-studded ALL female cast in the primes of their career (or early in their careers). I'm happy to have it with the current version in our home DVD library.

The Women (original film Based on Claire Booth play)

The original is so much better than the recent remake. It is a glimpse into how some parts of society lived in a different generation.

  Great Movie!

Movie played well and the storyline is well done and well acted. Sometimes I feel that the actors in black and white films overextend themselves to compensate for the film or because they feel it would make them stand out more. Much better than the newest version of this film, which also has a stellar cast.

  The Women (30's version)

The new movie coming out reminded me how much I liked the old one. The catty comments and back stabbing was very edgy for its time, and yet is still so entertaining today.

The Women, as seen by a man!
Review created: 06/05/08

Set in upscale manhattan in 1939, very funny, sassy, classy, whitty women. Listen for the one liner remarks. This movie was ahead of its time.

  The Women

An excellent movie in the 1930's style, with great stars. I prefer Turner's colorized version, although most people do not. This is one of my all-time favorite movies. You have to watch it at least twice to get all the excellent dialog.

One of the best movies ever made! Classic comedy.
Review created: 06/03/06

I was having a party where I wanted to show The Women and realized I didn't actually own a copy. It's one of my all time favorite movies. Made in 1939, it features an all woman calvalcade of stars -- Roselind Russell, Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Joan Fontaine and Paulette Goddard, to name a few. I love everything about it! It's in black and white with a fashion show scene in color.

i was so suprised to see that it was an all women movie and how the director pulled it off without any one else! to see these wonderful women and the stars was great we certainly need more like them it just seems so different that in the earier days how you could get away with directing a move without men and make such a big hit out of it usually if you wanted a hit you needed leading men in them even if they were gay just to sell the move lets face it back in the 30 40 and 50s it was a mans movie studio if you are lookins for a great movie with lots of stars of days gone buy get this movie you will not be disappoined!!!!!!!!!
