Album Notes 2 LPs on 1 cassette. Both are available separately on CD and cassette. In the early 1980s, record companies started reissuing their most popular artists' releases as specially priced, two-for-one cassettes. Such is the case with WOMEN & CHILDREN FIRST/FAIR WARNING. Both albums capture Van Halen just as the group was turning into America's most popular heavy metal band, on the strength of hit albums and sold-out arena tours. Unlike later-day Van Halen, guitar wiz Eddie Van Halen had a perfect foil in macho vocalist David Lee Roth--the pair's ego-gratifying battles for the spotlight helped create some of rock's greatest and most enduring songs. While 1980's WOMEN & CHILDREN FIRST and 1981's FAIR WARNING may not be as instantly recognizable to the casual fan as the band's self-titled debut or 1984, both remain Van Halen's most challenging releases. Although the band was enjoying massive success, strife was running rampant behind the scenes. A dark undercurrent can be detected on songs like "And the Cradle Will Rock," "Everybody Wants Some," "Fools," "Mean Street," "Dirty Movies," "Unchained," "So This Is Love?," and "Hear About It Later." Still, this is Van Halen, and there's plenty of rockin' fun to be had on these hard rock classics.
