Classic, old-fashioned British frightener
This made-for TV movie is a classic. My wife and I saw it for the first time on Christmas Eve 1989, and it gave us the creeps far more than we expected. A wonderful, M. R. James-like plot (based on a beautifully written book of the same name by Susan Hill), a script written by Nigel Kneale of Quatermass fame, a great cast, and lots, and lots, and lots of shadows, fog and apparitional spookery will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. If you like atmospheric, post World War I British drama or if you just like having the bits scared off you, this is one you should not miss.
