Nice try, but..

After hearing 'Dimension' months before the debut came out, I was, needless to say, pretty excited about Wolfmother and the upcoming debut. Although 'Dimension clearly ripped off Sabbath's 'Black Sabbath' in its chorus, the band seemed promising enough to give a listen. Upon picking up the debut album though, I was hopelessly dissappointed. The songwriting is atrocious, it rarely makes sense--and when it does, it seems written by a 13 year old D&D player. On top of that, the album is just plain boring and derivative. Many times the band had an opportunity to delve off into some uncharted territory and try something new, but I was always brought back to the same intro/verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge format. There is basically one riff to each song, and while neat enough at first, the monotony becomes grinding by three minutes in. There are a few promising ideas on this debut, but overall the songs are easily interchangable and bland, and the vocalist's voice grinds on one's nerves very quickly.
