I really love this book, and bought it signed by the author as a birthday gift for my husband. I thought it was a great deal for the price and an excellent product. It is a fantasty novel, the first in the series The Sword of Truth. It picks up into action right away and keeps the pages turning at record speed until the amazing conclusion. Whether or not you enjoy fantasy I would recommend this book because the characters are very real and easily related to the plots are deep, the descriptions are amazing, and the whole series will soon become a favorite!

Terry Goodkind wrote a masterpiece. It is the most involving fantasy novel I have ever read in my near 40 years of enjoying all sorts of fantasy. It is a definitely an adult novel and no one under 18 should be allowed to read the series due to it's graphic nature.

CAUTION: Only read if you want to get dragged through 10 more books!

Just like Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, Goodkind gets his Sword of Truth series of to an amazing start with this book. However, as the series progresses, the quality of story and the pace definitely declines (around book 4-5). Goodkind does an exemplary job of making you care about his characters. This book should definitely only be read by mature audiences. If it was made into a movie it would definitely be R due to decapitations, murder, rape, nudity, etc. etc.

Richard Cypher is a simple woods guide in Westland, a relatively simple region protected by a barrier which came into existence when his wizard grandfather, Zedd, fled a war to protect his daughter and grandson. The story follows his adventures as he meets Kahlan, becomes the Seeker of Truth and learns how to use magic. His encounters with Darken Rahl, D'haran soldiers, and Deanna, a Mord Sith sent to capture Richard.

The book could almost stand by itself as a work of fiction. Definitely worth the read if you enjoy fantasy.

Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind 1995

This is by far one of the best firsts in a genre that hosts many fantasy series, sagas, and great authors. Goodkind really keeps readers involved and anxious with his descriptive, and intriguing writing style. Truly an original piece of work, filled with a world full of new creatures and ideas. This is the book thats to blame for really getting me so interested into reading in the first place, and anyone that picks this one up will not put it down until the last page.

Recommended Authors: Robert Jordan (Wheel of Time Series)
George R.R. Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire Series)
L.E. Modesitt Jr. (The Saga of Recluce Series)
Terry Goodkind (The Sword of Truth Series)
J.R.R. Tolkien (The Hobbit, Lord of The Rings)

  Fantasy epic at its best
Review created: 11/04/09
by:

I had never read any fantasy books prior to 1998. But both of my sons were so excited by the book, and had successfully convinced all their friends to read it, that when they encouraged me to try it, I did. I have never been sorry for their suggestion.
Terry Goodkind writes the kind of fantasy that, even for someone NOT familiar with the genre, they will immediately understand and enjoy this literary style. Here is a tale of a man from a simple background who becomes the most loved, hated, and powerful man in this world, simply by being who he really is. Terry has created well developed characters, themes, realms, villians, and subplots that keep you turning page after page, not wanting to put the book down. The ONLY thing I didn't like about it is, its too thick to stick in my pocket and carry around, to read again when I have a chance. It is the premiere story in "The Sword of Truth" series, an epic that now spans over a dozen books. In my humble opinion, it even outshines Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" saga.
I decided to buy it...again...because I have given away my prior two copies to others, encouraging them to read the series. This will not be the last time I buy this book.

Amazing Series, Magic & Adventure & Intrigue
Review created: 06/07/09
by:

This is an amazing series about good vs evil, magic, warriors, beautiful ladies, and problems that must be solved. I have read the entire series and recommend it often. The size of the books may be daunting, but you will be lost in a world of magic that you don't even realize you have just read 500 pages. It is a wonderful escape from reality! I highly recommend any one who loves when the good guy wins, check out these books. And for those of you who love action, a great plot, and surprise situations, yep this series is for you too! I hope you enjoy as much as I have!

This is an amazing series of books and I have been trying to find this first one for sometime now. There is a TV series about these books called The Legend of the Seeker that is very well done also.

Think Danielle Steel but with wizards and dragons
Review created: 03/15/09(updated 03/15/09)

If what you want is to shut your mind off after a hard day but without the hangover or the video game headache, then you might want to pick up Wizard's First Rule. The emotional focus of the book is mainly on the romance between the two leads, Richard and Kahlan, which is deeply angsty and, while unrealistic, satisfyingly intense. The story has enough suspense to hold a reader's interest, but don't walk in expecting a consistent universe or an intellectually satisfying ending.

Overall, Wizard's First Rule is not very well written. Whenever Goodkind writes himself into a corner, some new magical spell or beastie that we've never heard of before shows up as a plot point ex machina. There's also a lot of sleaze. It isn't that the story involves sex, rape, violence and other prurient elements so much as that sex, rape and violence are slathered in on top of the plot for cheap thrills. The characters come off as type caricatures. Rachel is the Piteous Little Girl. Zedd is the Wise(cracking) Old Man. Rahl is Big Bad.

This book got me reading again!!!
Review created: 01/22/09

My friend introduced me to this series and I realized just how much I enjoyed reading. I wanted to have a soft cover for my kids to read when they can. The story is simple and easy to follow, but the writing is fantastic. It keeps you wanting more. I would have to say though that "The Stone of Tears" (I believe to be book 4) was a little boring and hard to get through. After that I took right off reading a whole book in a day. I finally got to the last in the series and felt a sense of accomplishment, something I've not felt in a while. Now the series is on television and they did a decent job. It must be difficult to write a season show from one book and keep watchers coming back, but I think they are doing good so far. I recommend this book for anybody who enjoys reading fantasy, and likes to keep track of a small cast of characters.

Great Book, Great Series - Interesting TV Show
Review created: 12/21/08
by:

I first read Wizard's First Rule several years ago and got hooked very quickly. Terry Goodkind's skills at character building are amazing and his stiry telling made you wish there were more time in the day to read. I've read the entire Sword of Truth series but went back to the beginning when the TV adaptation started about 2 months ago -Legend of the Seeker.

I have to admit that I like the show, but it doesn't follow the story in the books. Still, the beginning of the adventures of Richard and Kahlan which started in Wizard's First Rule was expertly crafted and would win over men and women alike.

Be forewarned, this series thrives on character-relationships but the action depicted is exceptionally brutal. Terry does not mask any of it. As an adult, I appreciate this quality of realism in my fantasy-realm escape but it is not appropriate for younger teenagers.

  FELL INTO THIS BOOK!
Review created: 01/10/08

My intention to start this series by Terry Goodkind spans back a few years; well, I finally got started. Wonderful character building and a fantastic escape from the chaos of the real world. Great action and an uncomplicated plot. Looking forward to starting the second book in the series.
