Wizard's First Rule is not a good book, but if what you want is to shut your mind off after a hard day but without the hangover or the video game headache, then you might want to pick it up.

The emotional focus of the book is mainly on the romance between the two leads, Richard and Kahlan. It is deeply angsty and, while unrealistic, it is satisfyingly intense.

Overall, Wizard's First Rule is not very well written. Whenever Goodkind writes himself into a corner, some new magical spell or beastie that we've never heard of before shows up as a plot point ex machina. There's also a lot of sleaze. It isn't that the story involves sex, rape, violence and other prurient elements so much as that sex, rape and violence are slathered in on top of the plot for cheap thrills. The characters come off as type caricatures. Rachel is the Piteous Little Girl. Zedd is the Wise(cracking) Old Man. Rahl is Big Bad. If you open this book expecting to need more than two functioning brain cells, then you'll be disappointed.

  Wizard's First Rule Audiobook MP3

The protective barrier that separates Westland from its neighbors to the east is about to fall, letting loose a monstrous evil upon the world. Only the combined efforts of a young man dedicated to finding the truth, an enigmatic woman intent on concealing her past, and a crusty old hermit resigned to his inevitable destiny can prevent the opening of the three boxes of Orden-an event with the potential to destroy existence itself. The inclusion of graphic scenes of sado-eroticism, though integral to the story, may deter purchase by some libraries. Nevertheless, this first novel offers an intriguing variant on the standard fantasy quest. The richly detailed world and complex characters will appeal to mature fantasy aficionados.

  Wizards First Rule

This is the first book of many in the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. I have enjoyed every one of them. I bought this on audio, even though I have the entire series already, because I wanted to be able to listen to the book while I run on a treadmill. I have found that buying the audios in MP3 format will GREATLY reduce the amount of time I spend transferring the cd's to my MP3 player. Compare 20 CD's with just 2 for MP3 format.

First book in the Sword of Truth series
Review created: 10/26/06

What can I say, I absoltely loved it !. Once I started to read and went through the first couple of chapters, I could not put this book down. It was the suspence that killed me along with the mystery, danger and magic. I'm a bit of a slow reader and when I had to put this book down for the night, I could not sleep !

I bought this book because I love fantasy reading and when I saw a friend reading this book, I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did ! After reading Wizards First Rule, this book only left me hanging at the end for .... Stone of Tears. Terry GoodKinds second book in the Sword of Truth series.
