The Best Bakshi Animation ever, no really, ok maybe not

But really good, I personally will take it over any of the other Bakshi films, even Heavy Metal.

After the final nuclear battle earth takes several million years to repair itself. When it does, it brings back the Faeries, elves, sprites, and other spirits of the forest from our past myths and legends.
Twin Brothers are born to the Queen of montagar, one attracting and one repelling, three thousand years after the queens death the brothers meet in battle.

The multimedia animation is incredible and the use of WWWII film footage is inspired. If you have never seen this movie, you owe it to yourself to see it. The observance of sundown scene is full of satire and mirth, but not the best scene, you view and pick your fav, mine is well never mind, it is yours that is what matters.

So many times during Reagan's Presidency I wanted to send a copy of the film to him. Now we have GW in charge and I would like to send him a copy but I would would end up on a no fly list in a New York Minute.

Check it out as a rental or just buy it, it is that good of a Sci-Fi animation.

cheers!

Ralph Bakski was the counter-traditional animator of the 1970s. Some of his pre-Wizards work included Fritz the Cat and Coonskin. Wizards, produced in 1976, is a story of good-versus-evil commentary on war. There are direct parallels between the evil Black Wolf and Nazis aggression of World War II. I like the character Avatar and the Borgesque Hugh character Necron 99.

The rotoscoped war scenes are annoying after the umpteenth time in the film and I always hated the voice over of Bakski's films. The characters often are yelling or (worse yet) their voices are duplicated and repeated.

I bought the film because of the nostalgic value of the work. Wizards was developed for an adult audience, it is not for children. Another film of this era that I like is Bruno Bozzetto's Allegro Non Troppo. An Italian animation put together like Fantasia, but with a sarcastic adult edge. The short set to Ravel's Bolero is still a classic for me.

  Wizards(1977) by Ralph Bakshi

Action adventure film with a humorous story line about 2 wizards in the future. Test film for original animation sequences for "Lord of the Rings" films and "American Pop" done by Ralph Bakshi. The artwork of the painted cells is bright and colorful.

I found it thrilling to see it again, though not up to today's productions even other works of Ralph Bakshi, or works of Hayao Miyazaki, but to me still entertaining.

This is an animation fanasy about GOOD verse EVIL. You have the story of two brothers who are wizards and hate each other. In the first fight the good wizard win and bands his brother to the bad lands. This area is the nuclear waste land.
The bad wizard finds industry to build tanks, air planes, and so on. Then he
starts killing off anyone who is in line with his brother. Then he attack the same people and killes all the men. Leaving only woman and young children.
Now the good brother can't stand by and watch all the pain. So he head out to have a face to face fight. He has the face to face but the death of his brother comes as a big surprise!!
There is a very beautiful fairy who is knock out pinup.. Who always in the company of the Good wizard. NICE!!!
I first saw this film while serving in the service in West Germany and the crowd went nuts with the ending. I don't want to give away the ending SO BUY THIS MOVIE TO FIND OUT!!

This is an older movie with a (then) PG rating. It's a bit graphic for younger children to watch, and I'd recommend it for anyone about 12+, due to the suggestive themes and violence. It's a good story with awesome artwork/animation, fun characters and good moral. It ranks very high on my favorite animated movie list. The extras include pictures and an interview (?) with the creator/director. I wish there were more to it than just that, but they are still pretty good.
I remember the first time I saw this movies when I was younger, it left such an impression on me. I decided to finally buy to share it with my friends, whom are all art buffs. Everyone I've ever shared this movie with has enjoyed it just as much as I have, and I hope you will too.

Bought this movie after someone compared my art-style to the one in this title, and I was not disappointed! Yes, the animation is old, and the audio-track is a bit sub-par due to the oldness of the thing, but if you can go beyond that, Wizards is outstanding! Brilliant story of WWII technology against magical elves and fairies, which will please everyone with a taste for dark fantasy.

I remember seeing this film as a young boy in the 70's. I liked it then, and have found that it has aged well. Wizards is a cult classic in my book. The story is something akin to Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, but has its own style. There are some strange animation techniques used. Some people may not like it, but I found the movie to be quite enjoyable. Far out man!

  Wizards is a must have.
Review created: 07/11/08

I saw this film at the drive in movie theater along with "Star Wars" back in the early seventies. They were both new and amazing films but like others who have reviewed this movie, I feel that once you have seen it you will never forget it. It is now a cult classic but should be in every sci-fi movie library. The animation was ahead of its time, the storyline excellent. Can't wait to get the DVD version as I gather the color is more like the original movie was, vibrant. I would recommend this movie to anyone interested in sci-fi, animation, the seventies era and true movie buffs.

Ralph Bakshi is the creator of Fritz the Cat and the animated version of Lord of the Rings. Many animation techniques were experimented win in Wizards that were later used in LOTR on a much bigger budget. Finally seeing this film in the clarity of a DVD format is a great pleasure and I highly recommend it.

Wizards - Animated cartoon by Ralph Bakshi
Review created: 04/15/08

I saw Wizards at a late movie show back when it came out in 1977 - Star Wars also came out that year and completely overshadowed Wizards, basically never to be seen again (except for the die-hard cult followers, that is. Once you've seen it, you will never forget it!).
By itself, it is a fairly straight-forward good-vs-evil story, in the same vein as Star Wars, ironically, but Bakshi (here before he created the Lord of the Rings animations)tells it with imagination and flair, allbeit very primitively. On the director's commentary he even boasts about how simplistic the animation is - and if you don't spend too much staring into each frame but instead absorb the ambience of it, the film becomes engrossing and kinda fun! Bakshi's characters run the gamut from archetypal goblins, over-the-top sexified elves, wise-acre wizards and a major plotline involving Hitler's propaganda archives wrapped into a wild and fun-loving epic (the good-vs-evil thingy). Bakshi describes this as a "kids movie" but when I saw it I understood the power and seriousness of its message and political points. NOT for your niece nor nephew - let them sample the Disney lexicon.
It has lasting appeal because of the passion behind it and the timelessness of the message - and if you enjoy seeing animation in its raw form, watch the flick first, then listen to Bakshi's commentary - it is a piece of animation history that any self-respecting anime fan MUST see.
Truley a hand-drawn work of love.

A must see for any si/fi and animation fan

I am a si/fi buff and I enjoy any movie that I can emerse myself in. Wizards is just that movie. I see animation as a way to convey a fictional world without spending millions of dollars on high tech sets and computer graphics. There are no limits to what an animator can draw. The story is solid and ties together firmly in the end. Just the right amount of violence, drama and character development that any good movie has.

Awesome Movie from the late '70's
Review created: 01/01/08

This movie is so good I would suggest it to anyone! BUT it is something that you should not show your children under the age of 15 for sure...
I first saw this movie as a kid believe it or not and was hooked.
This movie was done in the late 1970's and is almost all animation. It takes the theme of science versus magic but with a real comdic twist.
I love the color and humor and was soooo happy to find it on DVD.
The seller I bought this through on EBay was wonderful and I am sure that you will enjoy your buy too!

This is my FAVORITE animated film. It has withstood the test of time; I might not recommend it to children since it does have a little suggestive, although animated T & A. But, it's not any worse then the absolute krell on Saturday morning kid's TV these days, so I still highly recommend it. Fabulous use of color.

A Classic Cartoon for fantasy lovers
Review created: 07/07/07

I enjoyed watching Wizards again. I saw this movie in the theater as a child, I remember the fun I had with my family watching it. I love the style of animation and the way in which the story is delivered through and abstract and often Dark mode of storytelling. It has always been a favorite of mine and remains so to this day. I won't say it's for everyone, but you definetly could watch worse.

  Awesome classic work of animation!!
Review created: 06/03/07

I was so happy to discover that Wizards had been released on DVD. First of all, I feel it is a timeless piece of work about good versus evil, mixed with some flirtatious fun and adult humor. The animation and graphics are awesome, and the movie itself had me captivated from the first time I had seen it, about 20 years ago. It is a film that I definitely had to add to my permanent collection.
