The Wizard of Oz (DVD, 2009, 2-Disc Special Edition)

Great movie for the kids, a classic. My daughter loves the movie so much. A must have for any movie collection.

It is a joy to be able to share this classic with my kids. The movie has been re-done very well with all the digital effects. It takes nothing away from the first time experience for the kids and is just as good all these years later. So were off to see the Wizard.

We all grew up watching this movie. I remember how amazed I was when I first saw it in color. I remember how disappointed I was with the quality of the VHS version. No complaints here. I expected to like this movie. I didn't expect to enjoy it as thoroughly as I did. The color and definition are definitely better than anything I've seen before. The sound is superior. It will give the viewer a new appreciation for this great classic. Well worth the investment. A real keeper.

The film follows 12-year-old farmgirl Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) who lives on a Kansas farm with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry, but dreams of a better place "somewhere over the rainbow." After being struck unconscious during a tornado by a window which has come loose from its frame, Dorothy dreams that she, her dog Toto and the farmhouse are transported to the magical Land of Oz. There, the Good Witch of the North, Glinda (Billie Burke), advises Dorothy to follow the yellow brick road to the Emerald City and meet the Wizard of Oz, who can return her to Kansas. During her journey, she meets a Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), a Tin Man (Jack Haley) and a Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), who join her, hoping to receive what they lack themselves (a brain, a heart and courage, respectively). All of this is done while also trying to avoid the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton) and her attempt to get her sister's ruby slippers from Dorothy, who received them from Glinda.

The Wizard of Oz is a classic and timeless movie that everyone should own. It featured ground breaking special effects that were a marval for it's time (1939). I love it as a kid and I love it as an adult. There is nothing to hate about this movie.

I enjoyed watching all the behind the scenes and special features that were on disc #2. I was shocked at all the footage that has been in archives for so long.

Buy this movie. In this day of digital restoration, this is how the movie was meant to look like. It's too bad that the original actors and actresses are not around to see it. They'd love it!!!!

This movie is obviously a must own for all, but for Oz fans the special features on this edition are great- and I always find that stuff boring and overall just plain dumb.

Wizard of Oz is and have always been one of my favorites. It reminds me of my grandparents, who often read this story to me.

I bought the brand new DVD and viewed Halloween Night, our new family tradition. The black and white beginning (a I rememeber seeing on TV) has been re-digitalized to be in sepia tone which really enhances the Kansas setting and the surroundings. The actual color enhancement of this version is outstanding: the bright yellow brick road, the amazing green skin tone of the Wicked Witch of the West, and especially the glittery ruby slippers on Dorothy just come alive. A beautiful, beautiful job! The re-digitlized sound was not that evident of a difference, but I do have an older dvd theatre system with 5.1 surround sound, which did still work well and was wll-balanced overall.
The #2 disk with special features was a treat: narrated by Angela Lansbury (my personal favorite actress of 'Murder She Wrote') and the theatrical trailers from 1939, 1940 and all the way to 1998 were quite amusing. The other great feature was the clips of scenes and entire portions of the movie which did not make it to the final version. Most of the edit cuts were well made, in my opinion, but fun to watch.
Overall, this is a version I am happy to have bought and look forward to watching again and again.

I watched this movie as a child growing up, I absolutely loved it! It hold your attention throughout the movie. I think any child or adult would enjoy this movie!

i love that its the 70th edition and this movie is a family treasure which we love to watch year after year. But only in the holiday season. we are very happy with this purchase.

This movie is a great classic which has always been loved by our family. We can now add my grandaughter to the list of happy viewers. The detail used for props and costumes makes this a wonder hit considering the level of technology used 70 years ago.
