"Wives and Daughters"

For anyone that is a Jane Austen fan and/or just loves quality works about Victorian England, Elizabeth's Gaskell's "Wives and Daughters" BBC version is a "must have"! Under the direction of Nicholas Renton, this screenplay version by Andrew Davies is awash with wonderful English dialogue, lavish period costumes and grand estates with their lush grounds - a veritable feast for the ears and the eyes.
And the actors, so carefully chosen for their respective portrayals of the characters and their individual personalities, will far from disappoint. Dr. Gibson (Bill Paterson) is a loving father and a very caring, knowledgable, upstanding, quick-witted man. Adding real flavor to the mix is Mrs. Kirkpatrick/Gibson (Francesca Annis)the mother/step-mother who exemplifies the adage "the end justifies the means" and her daughter Cynthia (Keeley Hawes)that pretty much lives to be admired at anyone and everyones expense.
The home of Squire (Michael Gambone) and Mrs. Hamley (Penelope Wilton) with their two sons Osborne (Tom Hollander) and Roger (Anthony Howell) depicts the all-too-familiar struggle between expectations and dashed hopes, life and death, the rigidity of what is thought acceptable and living with circumstances as they are.
Molly Gibson, Dr. Gibson's daughter, frank and outspoken but totally void of any shred of indecency, malice or manipulation is wonderfully portrayed by Justine Waddell. Those she loves the most use her and many accuse her yet she remains steadfast in her loyalty even when it costs her what she most desires and stains her reputation to do so.
"Wives and Daughters" is a well woven work of the loves, prejudices, obligations, and disappointments in the lives of the families and individuals it portrays. Five excellent hours of DVD viewing will fly by and I can guarantee you will want to view it again and again. Already it has gained a place among the favorites at the top of my viewing list.
