Great Watch it DRAMA FANS = As good as Jane Austen...
Review created: 10/31/08

Every winter I hunker down and watch mini-series while I type in books to my data base. Totally boring work, but I sit and watch movies. Just picked up this one here at ebay and found it thoroughly enjoyable. It reminds me of Pride and Prejudice starting Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. It follows a young girl, the daughter of a widowed doctor thru her trails and tribulations of finding her true love. My set also came with an extra features disc that had a 'making of' documentary. It was like reading a great period novel without having to hold the book. Buy it / rent it, watch it and enjoy. Blessings, Max Rainet.

I bought this because my sister and a friend both raved over it. They were right in loving it. the main character is so sweet and mature for her age. The man she loves is also very good, warm and caring. It is a feel good movie without being hard to follow. It is five hours long so you can watch it in 4 parts or all at once. Well worth your time.

If you are a fan of Jane Austen movies like Emma and Pride and Prejudice then this should soon become one of your favorites. It is well written and the actors are very good. All around great movie! There is another movie called "North and South" written by the same author (not about the Civil War). It is also worth watching.

Enjoy!

  Broken DVD case

I was excited to order Wives and Daughters for my mother for mother's day. When it came in the mail I was surprised to notice that the DVD case had been completely smashed. It was in pieces and falling apart. The DVD's were okay and I contacted the seller. The only thing they could do was offer me four dollars as a refund for a 20 dollar DVD. I am just telling the truth and you can decide if you want to take a chance.

a little disappointed

  Wives and Daughters (2006, DVD)

This series was excellently made. I highly recommend this for mothers and daughters to watch. There are a few scenes I was afraid were going to be too sexually suggestive for my daughter to see; because the advertisements made them seen suggestive: However they did not turn out that way. The scenes I am talking about are as follows: One in which Osborne visits his wife. They are shown in their bedroom, her fully dressed, he I believe is also fully dressed. He lays his head on her stomach... later we find out that she is pregnant. It was tastefully done and not suggestive to me. The second scene was one in which Cynthia and Molly (stepsisters) are in the bedroom. Cynthia is wearing a night gown that is falling off one of her shoulders. Not a big deal, but for modest folk like myself, I wished they had not dressed her that way. Again this was not a suggestive scene. In my opinion this series is suitable for all ages.

  Better than Jane Austen

I grew up loving Jane Austen movies, like Emma, Sense and Sensability, and Pride and Prejudice (the A&E version). I saw this version a couple of years ago and I love it. All my family agrees that it may even be better than Pride and Prejudice. Its a tradition to watch it once a year when we all come together for thanksgiving!!! Its amazing. Such a good story and really good acting!

  Amazing miniseries!

I love anything by BBC Video because they are just the sort of filmmakers that tend to follow the books exactly as it was written and shoot it in a way that even puts a person's imagination to shame. I bought it because it is my favorite miniseries, and is one of the best stories I have ever come across.

This is an excellent dvd and a must see only if you like the English culture. This movie is about a country doctor and his sweety, but frank beautiful daughter and her coming of age. You will laugh and cry along with her as she experiences love, lose, rejection, and utter happiness. You will want to watch this dvd at least twice to fully understand the plot.

  Wives and Daughters DVD
Review created: 11/06/09

I had been wanting a copy of Wives and Daughters on DVD and the price was low on this one because the plastic cover was imperfect. Went ahead and ordered it and it was just as described, and the DVDs inside were excellent quality, which was all I cared about, and the price plus shipping was low enough for me. So I have been very satisfied with this purchase!

  "Wives and Daughters"
Review created: 09/18/09
by:

For anyone that is a Jane Austen fan and/or just loves quality works about Victorian England, Elizabeth's Gaskell's "Wives and Daughters" BBC version is a "must have"! Under the direction of Nicholas Renton, this screenplay version by Andrew Davies is awash with wonderful English dialogue, lavish period costumes and grand estates with their lush grounds - a veritable feast for the ears and the eyes.

And the actors, so carefully chosen for their respective portrayals of the characters and their individual personalities, will far from disappoint. Dr. Gibson (Bill Paterson) is a loving father and a very caring, knowledgable, upstanding, quick-witted man. Adding real flavor to the mix is Mrs. Kirkpatrick/Gibson (Francesca Annis)the mother/step-mother who exemplifies the adage "the end justifies the means" and her daughter Cynthia (Keeley Hawes)that pretty much lives to be admired at anyone and everyones expense.

The home of Squire (Michael Gambone) and Mrs. Hamley (Penelope Wilton) with their two sons Osborne (Tom Hollander) and Roger (Anthony Howell) depicts the all-too-familiar struggle between expectations and dashed hopes, life and death, the rigidity of what is thought acceptable and living with circumstances as they are.

Molly Gibson, Dr. Gibson's daughter, frank and outspoken but totally void of any shred of indecency, malice or manipulation is wonderfully portrayed by Justine Waddell. Those she loves the most use her and many accuse her yet she remains steadfast in her loyalty even when it costs her what she most desires and stains her reputation to do so.

"Wives and Daughters" is a well woven work of the loves, prejudices, obligations, and disappointments in the lives of the families and individuals it portrays. Five excellent hours of DVD viewing will fly by and I can guarantee you will want to view it again and again. Already it has gained a place among the favorites at the top of my viewing list.

  A fantastic costume drama
Review created: 04/10/09

This movie tells the story of a young woman who lives at home with her single father. As she ages he begins to see the need of a woman in her life. With this in mind he goes out in search for a wife. The movie then follows the relationships that follow between the daughter, wife, friends, the wife's daughter and so on. I love this movie! It is so entertaining and all the characters are so dramatic and compelling to watch. Even though this is a 6 hour movie, it is well worth the wait for the last 10 minutes alone. However, the whole movie is a gem. If you love costume dramas, Jane Austen, North and South, or have a rainy afternoon to watch a movie, then this is just for you!

  Good movie

I really liked this mini-series, it was appealing to the nature of the movie, well composed and had a good character/actor combination to play out the story.
