And one instant classic. Probably one of the best games ever. The graphics are great, story is compelling and the game is long. It kept me hooked for hours and hours. I would give it four and 1/2 stars if they had but since they don't I will give it five. If you liked KOTOR series, NVW series and so on you will love this.

  The Witcher to work with.

Just so you know, you won't be able to play it if you're just using a acer aspire 4520. with a 1.9 GHZ processor and a 2GB RAM. and that is if you're using vista.
So unless your using Windows Xp.... you're computer will go slow and it will lag.
So try to minimize all the Ram intake on your computer by switching to XP or instead of using the theme of windows aero use the classic windows theme from your desktop properties and then lower the specs of the game graphics.

  Witcher Review
Review created: 10/13/09

The Witcher is a very fun role playing game where you play a monster slayer using alchemy & various weapons. It is quite challenging even when set to easy mode. The only thing that I didn't like about it is the way you navigate your character and the confusing camera angels. That really got on my nerves when trying to fight battles. It would have been a whole lot better to make it a first person view from the character's eyes rather than an over the shouler view. Also, the point and click way of moving the character was tedious and cumbersome. This could have been a really great game if these things were fixed. I was expecting character navigation similar to Fate or Morrowind.

  Witcher PC Game

I grew up before the internet was a social meeting place, in a time when you had to actually type in what direction to move in a game. I was frustrated with the mechanics of how those games played, but loved how they made you think. The Witcher brings back the feel of those games without the interface problems. It has an intutive interface with a very quick learning curve, a good story line, and keeping with the story it has some vulgar language; hence the reason for the Mature rating. It is a single player game with depth that is a pleasure to play. I don't have as much time to play now as I wish, but whenever I go back to it, it is very easy to pick up right where I left off.
This game won't be for everyone, but if you like first person role playing games, give this game a try.

  Fun game, with some buts
Review created: 03/31/09

The original game (or so-called non-enhanced version) does have multiple bugs in it that were addressed by patches, and works just fine. The latest patch on the Atari site is 1.4 - which takes the normal, older retail version and makes it into the full retail Enhanced Edition. The difference in graphics, game play, etc, are astounding. But...

Unlike the original version, 1.4 does NOT play nice with Windows XP 64bit - the patcher, as it is downloaded, will not work, period. Fortunately, there are two workarounds posted on the game support forums, and the patch, once extracted, does work.

But...

Once fully patched and installed, the game still won't work under XP64. However, it does seem to run just fine under Windows7 (beta). So there was some light in the darkness.

As for the game itself, beautiful hardly describes it. The graphics are stunning, especially on a machine that can handle the high resolutions and all the bells and whistles enabled. The game play can take some getting used to, but isn't all that difficult with practice.

This is definitely not a child's game. There are some themes that are quite mature, which may or may not be suitable for people under 17 - use your discretion about your kids maturity level before making this purchase.

Other than installation issues, this game is a must have for any true RPG'er - and the background story is also quite interesting.

The Witcher not the kind of game i wanted
Review created: 03/12/09

well it said role playing but not the type of game i was looking for, its very laggy and the player sort of jumps back and forth in the scenes so i put it on the shelf to wait another day when i am in the mood to play this type of game again, or it will become a gift for a family member.

  A Witchin Good Time
Review created: 03/05/09

The Witcher is a hybrid RPG based on the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski. It uses the Aurora engine from the Neverwinter Nights game. With 3 different POV this game has a perspective for everyone. It seems to be a fairly standard game with a few interesting twists. The player has the choice of choosing 3 different combat styles- each of which is suitable for different types of combat. A strong style for heavily armormed enemies, fast style for lightly armored, and a group style for many weaker enemies. During a fight there will be an on screen cue to link attacks into a series of combos which cause more damage. Other features include a standard potion making/alchemy kit and a dialogue effected plot line. However unlike many RPG's there usually is no good/evil dialogue choice but rather shades of both. Some of the decisions in game have a very far reaching consequence later on.
Witcher also comes with a slightly risque card system in which for every different person the witcher sleeps with he receives a card. This adds an interesting flavor to the game as you sometimes find yourself propositioning every woman you can find in the game in order to get another card. Have no fear though parents. The US version of the game has extremely toned down cards. In some cases a whole new skin was created.
Most of the visual effects in the game are typical with the engine used u he water is usually well rendered and the artwork from the above mentioned cards is usually very good. Keep in mind though the game WILL NOT RUN if your minimum specs are not upto par. This seems kinda silly to me but it has been tested and confirmed.
All in all the witcher is a pretty good game. The plot line is kinda generic and the dialogue choices limited and stilted but there are enough interesting features in the game for at least one replay.

  Terrible interface
Review created: 06/08/08
by:

I gave up playing this game within a few hours of starting just because the interface (in my opinion) sucked horribly. Mostly referring to camera/viewpoint control, but also controlling abilities and targeting, etc.

This game got great reviews mostly, so I may be the odd case that didn't like it, but like I said, I didn't want to play anymore after just a few hours.

  Kinda boring
Review created: 06/07/08

I like RPGs, both single player and MMO. They're probably my favorite genre. This one had some nice things along the RPG line, like choosing the way your character developed was fun and interesting. The best RPG quality of The Witcher is the quest, they seem real and authentic. It's like the people that assign the quest to you are in the world with you and actually care about the outcome.
But those qualities, along with a good story, weren't enough to keep me engaged. The two big turn offs were running between one location and another (just took a bit to long) and the fighting. The fighting was horrible and boring. It's just clicking on the bad guy in a bit of a rhythm. But it's hard to keep your cursor on the enemy and after 3 or 4 minutes it's already old. It's tedious, and quite frankly, lousy.
This is also the reason I didn't like Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. So if you liked that game, then you might like this one too. If you're into a little more button mashing and decision making then stick with WOW and the Final Fantasy series.

  The Witcher
Review created: 03/20/08
by:

This was one of the better games I have played. The graphics were excellent, the game play is easy and glitch free, and the story is pretty fairly engaging. Making changes to the character is fairly easy, but there really arent that many things that can be done of any real significance. The character is pretty well fixed, and the different skills are fairly narrow. Also, this is basically a mission based game. Although ther are lots of side quests, the terrain is limited and the NPC's are un-inspired at best. Still, all-in-all, its a really enjoyable game, that I was happy I bought.

Lots of fun in a little box
Review created: 02/12/08
by:

I couldn't give this an "excellent" rating because the game play is a little quirky and the in game tutorial should have been a lot better. However, I would have given it a "great" rating if there was one. The camera control is a little odd either in isometric view (even the manual doesn't suggest this view) or over the shoulder (You don't feel like the attack is coming from you but another guy just behind you and off to the right).

Once you get used to controlling your character you will have to figure out the many features the game has to offer pretty much on your own since the in game "tutorial" is very limited.

That being said this is a VERY fun game. You do get used to the controls pretty quickly and once you figure everything out the game really starts to be enjoyable. The graphics are very nice and there is a lot of eye candy. I would suggest downloading the trial version of this game to see if you like it before you buy it.
