Fun game, with some buts

The original game (or so-called non-enhanced version) does have multiple bugs in it that were addressed by patches, and works just fine. The latest patch on the Atari site is 1.4 - which takes the normal, older retail version and makes it into the full retail Enhanced Edition. The difference in graphics, game play, etc, are astounding. But...
Unlike the original version, 1.4 does NOT play nice with Windows XP 64bit - the patcher, as it is downloaded, will not work, period. Fortunately, there are two workarounds posted on the game support forums, and the patch, once extracted, does work.
But...
Once fully patched and installed, the game still won't work under XP64. However, it does seem to run just fine under Windows7 (beta). So there was some light in the darkness.
As for the game itself, beautiful hardly describes it. The graphics are stunning, especially on a machine that can handle the high resolutions and all the bells and whistles enabled. The game play can take some getting used to, but isn't all that difficult with practice.
This is definitely not a child's game. There are some themes that are quite mature, which may or may not be suitable for people under 17 - use your discretion about your kids maturity level before making this purchase.
Other than installation issues, this game is a must have for any true RPG'er - and the background story is also quite interesting.
