WISHPOOL makes no bones about its intentions. It's a hard rock album, pure and simple. The band takes its cues from post-Seattle grunge, but without the implied decadence. Though their sound is a variation on the gloomy, stylized sound of Alice In Chains, particularly in Damon Johnson's Layne Staley-esque vocals, Brother Cane streamlines things a bit more. WISHPOOL is an album with all the edges sanded. The simple, unpretentious arrangements eliminate anything other than the rocking necessities. Brother Cane has created an album that's as good as it could be; there's nothing that needs to be added or subtracted. In handyman's terms, they put on a 3/4-inch baseboard and walked away.
