Wishbone brings back so many memories of my childhood. It was thanks to him that I was exposed to great works of literature, that my parents wouldn't be able to read to me. Now as a teacher, I am trying to find all of his wonderful episodes, so that my students can have that experience too. He is funny, and educational.

In my opinion, the "Wishbone" TV series was one of the best kids shows ever produced. It's about Wishbone, a Jack Russell Terrier who has a "big imagination." Each episode features Wishbone, Wishbone's owner Joe and his mom Ellen Talbot, next door neighbor Wanda Gilmore, and Joe's two best friends Samantha and David in a situation that reminds Wishbone of a similar incident within a classic book.

In this episode, Joe gets in trouble at his school when he helps Ellie, the friendly lunch lady, secretly give leftovers from the cafeteria (which will be discarded anyway) to the local food bank even though is against Mr. Bison's rules. When Mr. Bison finds out about their donation, he fires Ellie and threatens to suspend Joe. But Joe refuses to give into Mr. Bison, and launches a protest of his actions with his fellow students.

Meanwhile, Wishbone is reminded of the story of Robin Hood. Wishbone sees that Joe is like Robin helping out the poor and the mean Mr. Bison is like the Sheriff of Nottingham. In his imagination, Wishbone reenacts the major parts of the Robin Hood story including winning the archery contest that the Sheriff sponsored, but Maid Marian is captured. In a battle at the end, Wishbone rescues Maid Marian and good King Richard pardons Wishbone and his Merry Men.

In the real life part of the show, Principal Leonard comes back just as a heated argument erupts between Joe, Mrs. Talbot, and Mr. Bison. She settles the argument, hires back Ellie, and tells Mr. Bison that she needs to see him in her office and everyone goes hope happy (except for Mr. Bison).

Wishbone really was a great kids show. Besides introducing younger viewers to the classics of literature, the show is also really funny. Wishbone has an obsession with food, and he's always offering to "help" Joe with the donated food. If you like Wishbone, be sure to add this episode to your collection!

  Great Family Friendly Viewing
Review created: 11/05/09

Cute, entertaining, and educational - fun for the whole family! Wishbone introduces your child to famous literary tales through the eyes of a lovable pet dog. Part of each episode features Wishbone in an exciting retelling of a famous tale, and the other part of the show takes place in the "real" world with Wishbone's family and friends.

Wushbone is a fun loving show. My kids get a kick out of a talking dog that dresses up... and we learn a little history too (kind of...).

This is a good example of why Wishbone was a great sucess for many years. It is a fun romp with an educational and moral overtone; specifically, a Robin Hood tale mixed with modern day themes. The only issue with this DVD is length. It is a very short episode. Here's hoping they release more lengthy compilations on DVD!

  Love Wishbone!
Review created: 08/02/06

Our family watched Wishbone years ago and was sad when they took it off. Now that there are a few DVD's out, we're happy again! I wish they'd put out the entire season.
This episode isn't one of the better ones, but we'll take what we can get.
