My grandmother bought this book for me when it first came out and I have read it several times since. It is a very heart-warming story. It made me think about what the mountains I live in were like back then. But even if you don't live in the mountains, I think you'll like this book! Great story!

This is a complete changeabout for Baldacci. I absolutely loved this book.
It is the perfect southern book. Read it and you will fall in love with the
mountains of southern Virginia and Lou and her family. It teaches many lessons about character and virtue and true love for neighbors and devotion to family.
I loved this book so much I have bought at least 8 copies to give as gifts.
All Baldacci's books are worth the reading but this one will slow your heartbeat and take you back to childhood.

A deeper softer read, you feel like you are living it

This book takes your mind deep into the virginia mountains. Where back in the
1930's life was still lived like was 150 years ago. I usually like suspense
and fast tract action, but this book grabed me. I didn't want to put it down. Wow, I think no matter what your normal read is, you won't be sorry you took the time to get to know the young boy "Diamond" who lived like a man, had the love of his dog, and was smarter than most us. How people who seem to have nothing, really have everything. And the evil in some mens souls is so shocking it leaves you speechless.

I loved it because it was vintage Baldacci....bright and descriptive;
a story that you wouldn't normally expect from the author, yet gripping
and heart rending.

I purchased this because I have become a fierce Baldacci follower and since
I started some years into his career, this was one that I needed to catch up
on and add to my library.

Having just finished his latest book, I am again wildly awaiting the next.

A beautiful story with vivid characters that will be hard to forget.
Honestly, how could you forgot Cotton or Diamond?
I would recommend this book very highly.

  A Very Nice Suprise!

I've noticed with authors who generally write great thrillers...when they try to slow it down, it doesn't usually work very well. That's not true here.
David Baldacci can not only write a great thriller, but a beautiful love story as well.
Set in the 30's, a 12 year old girl and her younger brother have to go from living in New York to living with a great grandmother in the mountains of Virginia. This is a wonderful story!

  Absolutely perfect title.

I enjoyed everything about the book. It brought me down to a level where we could learn to live with much less in today's world. I plan to meet David Baldacci at the Nationl Book Festival in Washington, DC this September.

  Great!

This book, set in Virginia in 1940, nevertheless reminded me of my visits to my grandparents' home farm in Kansas in the 1940s and 1950s. The hard work, the kindness, the cooking, the outhouse (at night!), the kerosene lanterns, the milking, all rang a bell. What these fictional people went through (and remembering what my own family went through) brought tears to my eyes! I'm wondering what younger people think if they read it??
