The Winner by David Baldacci (1997, Hardcover)

Excellent Read! The story of a dirt-poor young woman who is hoping for a better life for herself and her infant daughter when she is offered the gift of a $100 million dollar lottery jackpot. The offer comes from a chameleon-like financial mastermind/madman who can rig the lottery so that she will win. The offer comes at a high price though, she will have to change her identity and leave the US with her daughter forever. She is ready to refuse the offer when violence and circumstances beyond her control force her to accept the offer. She has made a deal with the devil and there are dire consequences when she breaks the agreement 10 years after winning, by returning to the US. Great story, fast-paced and a hard to put down book. I loved the strong characters, especially the heroine of the story. I will definately be looking for other titles by this author. I loved this story!

I purchased this brand new hard-cover book for a Christmas present. You can find this same book anywhere in paperback but the hard-cover version cannot be found in bookstores anymore. There is not an abundance of new ones available , even on Ebay, so I was very pleased to find this one to complete my sister's collection by this author. The sellar offered this with free shipping which was a great deal.

This was a great buy. It is one of the best books I have ever read and I have bought several copies for family members.
