Worth a watch

This is not a bad film, but coming out at the same time as Pearl Harbor (which was also a beautiful MESS) also hurt this films release. Both films were about WWII and this one made an attempt to tell the story of the code talkers. The problem was more on Hollywood's idea of war rather than the story. Rumors of the unhappy director during filming due to restrictions and concerns from studio executives may have caused some of the damage to this film... however this film is still flawed. There are areas where you can see obvious mistakes in the film with continuity (I vaguely remember seeing the craft service tent in the background in one shot, as well as two different locations being used for another shot: a wet Hawaii landscape with a soldier cut in with a dry California set) Over all I do not believe that it was a terrible film, but it is still a film that you may want to watch just once. Fans of John Woo may find this film disturbing and may blame it for his departure from the Hollywood scene in these past recent years (but I would rather blame Paycheck than this film personally). Adam Beach was an exceptional actor in this flawed film, he showed the emotion of his character very well and if this film had succeeded, it would have propelled him from his performance.
Bottom line: This film is ok, its not great nor is it terrible. A free watch on tv, or a cheap bluray/dvd is still worth the time. The price of a $10 movie ticket... maybe not (but as a matinee maybe).
Edit:
Bluray transfer: The transfer to bluray is not an impressive one, I forgot to mention this above. There was not a big difference between an up converted DVD to this Blu-ray disk. There were still areas that were fuzzy, the color remained dull even for a war film, and only brief moments seemed crisp. Bottom line, this is not a very good transfer as a bluray item... But the film itself is still worth a watch.
