  Great American Forged

It's timeless American forged! A lot of people still use Wilson blades for very good reason - the design and feel of it is timeless.
It hits a little harder than Mizunos, but still feeling is very soft. Plus, it is definitely much more durable.
The progression works better than old Progressive from 90's. Actually, I found up to 5 iron easy enough to go full swing. 3 and 4 are harder. I suggest using hybrid clubs as replacement.
Chipping and pitching is unreal. I never been good at this part of the game with Mizuno MX-20's. The game improvement may make it easy to hit, but certainly takes away touch and feel. I got so many kick ins with these that my score actually improved on harder courses.
The ball flight is relatively low and requires pretty decent amount of practice.
I can't believe how cheap Fi-5 are on ebay. It's silly to pay double for Miznuos and Hogans. Use the saving for some coaching instead. You won't regret it.

Wilson Staff Forged Fi5 Irons compared to FG-51
Review created: 12/16/06
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I have been a Wilson iron collector and player for many years. I play to a single digit handicap for those of you who care about the experience and ability of the person writing a review. As I've stated in other reviews I've written, the Wilson Staff FG-51 is my all time favorite Wilson forged iron. I still play them today because of their traditional looks and clean design. They also help make me a better golfer because I'm forced to hit the sweet spot or suffer the penalty of a poorly struck shot. That's what golf is all about, great results for a well hit shot and poor results for a poorly struck shot. From it's early inception in Scotland, golf has been about truthfulness, honesty and integrity. That's why I love the FG-51's. They are simply a a 'true' and simple golf club with no gimmicks. Now, to the Fi5 forged irons. I own a set and have played them numerous times. The size of the iron head is slightly larger than the head on a FG-51 iron. Also, the top edge of the blade is slightly thicker, to a fault. I do not like irons with thick top lines. Why? Because the thicker top line gives me the visual impression the iron is too heavy and will not offer the sensitive feeling I'm looking for when hitting a golf shot. Even though the 8 through the PW is a muscle back design, the Fi5 does not offer the feel of a traditional blade to the degree of an FG-51 blade. Wilson made a cavity back forged iron called the 'Progressive' back in 1993 that more closely compares to the FG-51 than does the Fi5. The Progressive design had the thinner top line than does the Fi5 and the sweet spot was in the same place on the face of all the irons. I'm sure the sweet spot is in the same place on the Fi5's as well. I can't quite figure out why but the metal forging looks better to me on the FG-51 than that of the Fi5. Could that be because the FG-51's were forged in the U.S. in Wilson's former plant in Tennessee as opposed to being made overseas as I believe the Fi5's were? Many new Fi5 iron sets are being sold on Ebay now in the $200-$250 dollar range. I just bought a used set of FG-51's with Rifle 6.5 shafts for $400.00. Does that tell you something about their popularity? Now I'm not saying the Fi5 irons are worthless. They are a fine iron, capable of providing many excellent golf shots and of course, are more forgiving on off-center hits than the FG-51's. But if you want a forged cavity back iron, I would opt for the Progressive iron rather than the Fi5 and it's price is much less as well. But for the truest feel in golf, a muscle back, thin top line blade will out perform a cavity back any day. I'll always play the FG-51's.

  Wilson Staff Fi5 Iron set

Excellent sticks and like the old saying goes you get what you pay for. I tend to hit these a little shorter than my old set BUT i do have more control and more stopping control with the shorter irons. I hit the longer irons (3,4,5 & 6) with a 5 yard fade but if I want to hit a hook or draw no problem. I would not suggest these clubs to a person just taking up the game because if you mishit a shot you really know it with your hands and the outcome of the shot. But when you do hit a good one you know it as you are walking up to the green. The control on these irons have lowered my putts per round by a third.

  Nice Irons, but wrong shaft!

The reason for the "Below Average" review is because although the construction of the forged iron heads is innovative and very playable, unfortunately the shaft that is connected to them is completely inadequate as is the grips and the factory shaft connection. I digress: DO NOT buy these irons with the Dynamic Gold R300 "Lite" regular flex shafts like i did. They are not of adequate integrity to hold the head weight of these irons. I've had them a week and already the 3 iron head came flying off as I made a clean fairway shot with the club. Pathetic! I only have an 85mph swing speed so there's no way I have a tour swing that should cause such separation. Upon inspection of the broken shaft I noticed that these shafts are mostly hollow with a mostly plastic shaft, covered by what appears a thin, plastic-like layer of "steel". These shafts are crap! These clubs NEED a REAL STEEL shaft such as the Dynamic Gold S300 shaft as a minimum requirement! Not only do the shafts suck, but the plastic covers that mate the shaft to the clubhead come loose with very little use- pathetic! The grips are those awful, pencil thin, slick Golf Pride "Full Cord" grips that Wilson obviously buys for about 33 cents each and then puts on clubs they sell for over $500- shady! These will need to be replaced before you even take them to the driving range- otherwise you'll have no confidence in your ability to hold onto the clubs throughout the swing.

It's not all negative news however. The iron heads are the best part of these clubs. They are a Pro Combo type set-up that are incredibly forgiving, soft, and accurate with sexy lines! You can go do some legitimate flag hunting with these irons once you mate a set of S300, X100, or Rifle shafts to these heads along with a set of reliable grips such as the Lamkin Crossline grips.

  A Quality Alternative
Review created: 10/07/09

First off, I am a 3 handicap and I play a lot of golf. I am 43 years old and I play tournament golf. I am not rich so when I wanted to replace my Hogan's I looked at the Mizuno's and the Titleist, but I could not pull the trigger because of the cost. I have a set of 1967 Wilson blades and have always been a fan of Wilson (my first baseball glove was a Wilson), so I checked out their post fat shaft clubs and ran across the fi5's - I bought them on Ebay for considerably less than the other brands. My clubs have the S300 Dynamic gold shafts.

I sure am glad I did - these clubs have helped my game immensely - they produce a penetrating ball flight, working the ball is easy, they look great, and they fit right in with all the Mizuno's and other high end brands.

These are NOT a game improvement club - you need to be able to hit the center of the club consistantly. But if you can, the club is very rewarding. The lofts are tad strong, but not as bad as the huge cavity back game improvement clubs. The paint comes out pretty quickly (I don't really mind). The full cord grips are excellent, but I prefer them - I know some don't care for them.

Overall, the quality is excellent, the price is awesome, and your group will comment on how pretty they are. My advice - Buy'em!

Wilson Staff Fi5 irons for better swings.
Review created: 05/19/09

These are very good irons all the way down to the two iron. I have not hit the 1 iron yet. Very crisp and great feel or shot feedback even on slight mishits with the 5 iron on up is not as bad as most people have been told although very solid shots are well rewarded with good trajectory and distance(215 yds.) average on 2 iron shots for me anyways. The Staff shafts are on the stiff side as was stated so you have to put a good swing on them or distance will suffer and you will definately feel it. This a great combination that Wilson came up with and probably why Padraig Harrington won his majors with them. If you are currently at 18 hdcp. or less/more and want to really improve along with a lot of practice these clubs are definately part of the equation. I had been wanting a set of these clubs and the price was right and despite some sole dings and scratches it was a great investment. Now I can give these to my son and purchase a new set.

  Nice set of irons
Review created: 12/12/08
by:

I just recently purchased these irons and was previously playing with the Wilson PI5's which are great irons as well, but recently sold them as the FI5's have taken over. The irons, besides being nice to look at, are very versatile.I've had no problems hitting knockdowns or higher shots and the 3 and 4 irons are being put to good use as well. The model is no longer being produced, but if your looking for a solid forged club at a terrific value, then look no further than the FI5's.

  Back to the Future
Review created: 10/13/08
by:

I wasn't going 88 in a DeLorean, but I was taken back in time when I looked at the pitching wedge through 8 iron in this set. They look like the classic Staff irons of the late 1970s and early 1980s that we all cut our teeth on so many years ago. The forged feel -- both good and bad -- is there with the scorting low irons. The move to the 7 iron and a cut back design is barely noticeable. Simply put, Wilson is back. Many of my playing partners are using the Ci7's and love them, but if you want a little taste of the oldies -- go for the Fi series. Beware of severe mishits; they sting just like they did thirty years ago. The lofts on all Wilson products are pretty strong so you might need to adjust about a half a club. For the price, you can't beat them.
