I have several sets of Wilson forged irons, dating back to 1960. The FG-51 irons are my favorite because of their clean lines and traditional look. No gimmicks like the cavity back plastic emblem irons of today. They have a thin top line when viewed at address and the head is the traditional smaller size, making the golf ball look actual size. Today's oversized clubs make the golf ball look the size of a marble. These were the last of Wilson's forged blade irons made in the U.S. which makes them a real collector's item as well. Wilson used to be the #1 iron on tour but due to a change in marketing philosphy, they moved away from what they did best and that was design and manufacture the very best blades on the planet. Blades are not for everyone but if you are looking for an iron that will help you improve your ball striking, then try a forged blade. If you're more interested in trying to 'buy' a better golf game, then don't bother with forged blades. The soft yet solid, almost imperceptible feel of these irons when hitting the ball correctly cannot be reproduced with a cavity back iron. The smaller sized head and thin top line enables the golfer to truly 'feel' those shorter shots around the green. Some of the larger cavity back irons are like trying to chip it close with a sledge hammer! Golfers of years ago were more feel oriented than the technical players of today. They didn't always know the exact yardages nor did they always have the perfect technical swing. But they used their senses along with forged blade irons to 'work' the ball close to the pin. The Wilson FG-51 irons are the best of the best and will rival or even exceed the Mizuno's of today.

Wilson recently released their latest forged blade iron and it's called the FG-59 to commemorate their 59th major win. That's when touring pro Padraig Harrington won the British Open. Obviously, the FG-59 should be called FG-61 because Padraig went on to win his second British Open and the PGA. The interesting thing here is, the FG-59 looks very similiar to the FG-51's I reviewed above. Wonder why Wilson keeps going back to earlier designs? Could it be they can't be improved upon as far as a blade goes? I'll say it again. You will not find a more effective and beautiful muscle back blade iron than the Wilson Staff FG-51. Period!

I AM A DEDICATED GOLFER.I HAVE TRIED AND USED ABOUT EVERY MIZUNO BLADE THERE IS AND WILSON WINS HANDS DOWN.I HAVE PLAYED THE FG 51 AND OWN A SET OF FG 17'S.THERE IS SOMETHING TO SAID ABOUT THE [US MADE BLADES]THAT WILSON USE TO MAKE.MY YOUNGER FRIENDS HIT MY FG 17'S AND CAN NOT BELIVE THE FEEL AND CONTROL THEY HAVE.IT IS A SHAME THAT WILSON WENT TO CHINA TO PRODUCE THERE CLUBS.I HAVE A LOT OF YOUNGER PLAYER FRIENDS OF MINE THAT WOULD BUY FG-51 AND 17'S IF WILSON STILL MADE THEM.TIGER-ERNIE-FREDIE-VJ AND A HOST OF OTHERS PLAY BLADES FOR A REASON.WILSON NEEDS TO GET BACK TO THERE OLD SCHOOL ROOTS AND MAKE THE BEUTIFULL BLADES THEY WERE FAMOUS FOR.
