I'm an incurable putter junkie and have tried all manner of hi-tech putters. My buddy has an original 8802 and has always bested me on the greens. I came across this re-issue and have since left all my more expensive putters at home. What's outstanding really is the feel of this putter. Better with an arcing stroke (which isn't what I was used to), it somehow tells you all about the speed of the putt. I also like the fact that, with it's miniscule sweetspot, I can toe-putt scarey downhill putts now and use almost the same stroke as normal. If you really don't need the original from the 1960s, get this re-issue from 1996. coming from someone who had a severe case of 'yips,' before, this putter has astounded me that I can handle a toe-weighted blade putter. Smoooooooooooooth!!!

I like the "old style" blade putters and the 8802 is all that.
The Wilson 8802 is a poor mans' Scotty Cameron Napa.
I also found someone who can refurbish clubs, does a great job and with a new grip I end up with what looks like a new putter.

Wilson 8802 Putter - Old school at its best
Review created: 07/05/07
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Wilson 8802, or also known as "Baby Ben" because it was putting great Ben Crenshaw's putter for his entire career is a classic old school club. It has a simple blade design and is a wonderful club if you are a "feel" player. It was my first putter as a youth teenager and I remember spending time on the practice green trying to snake in 40 footers like Ben Crenshaw and Jack Nicklaus. I purchased this putter as a gift for a freind that is about my age and an avid player. I thought he might like this bit of nostalgia and it turned out to be a great choice. It was also the putter he used as a youth and he was excited to receive it. It is great that you can find so many of these clubs on Ebay in great shape for a reasonable price! I highly recommend finding one and adding it to your arsinal of clubs.

Make sure you get what you pay for

Make sure the seller knows their golf, if there are questions which to most would seem obvious, ask them anyway.

Many seller purposely leave out vital information in their description of an item and take selective photos which do not represent the item correctly.

If the seller gives you a description and it is too general, ask more specific questions.

I have had more than one seller back off from their description when they realize you know more about the item they are selling than they do.However, their primary goal is to get rid of their item and some will simply be as vague as possible and play dumb.

Be persistent in finding out everything you need to know about the item(s) you are bidding on and remember either through ignorance or greed you still can receive incorrect information.

Sure you can file a grievance, but that is about the same process as going through small claims court.

It is what I expected it was in good condition and I will enjoy using it. The shaft has rust spots that should have been stated. All in all this has been a pleasent experience.

I love old golf clubs from when I was a kid (1960's), they make me feel young again (not that I've one foot in the grave already or anything). I also like to find the few bargains that sometimes pop up on ebay although they are getting more difficult to find.

  Wilson Tour Special Forged Putter
Review created: 07/09/09

This putter is great because it is not a wilson 8802. There are so many of the wilson 8802 around and not many of the tour special forged putters around. I am thankful to have found this putter for a good price.

I purchased a 8802 putter last week, I was pleased with the condition of the putter it was in very good shape..The price was cheap also they usualy go for 150 and more. This putter was pristeen it did have a few scratches but I knew that... I purchased it for a Turnament we have at our golf club everyone wears Knicker and uses clubs before 1974..it is quite fun ,, and they do allow 8802 putters and no ping anser putters so this putter will work quite nicely... thanks...

  Napa vs. 8802
Review created: 06/01/08
by:
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The article is partially misleading if the reader interprets "poor man's 8802" as an opinion that the Napa is a better purrter just because it is expensive.

The Cameron Napa does not have the Head Speed shaft which was used in the early 8802s. The shaft is the key to the putter's feel. If you handle an 8802 with the Head Speed shaft, you'll know what I mean. And if you're diligent, you can find 8802s with this shaft on Ebay for about 100$.

This putter is in very good shape. It could be used tomorrow if I wanted. This type of putter is very smooth to swing and the ball releases solidly. Since it is solid metal so don't get any miss hits.
