Enjoyable, but not what I expected

A few inconsistencies dropped this film from a 5/5 to a 4/5.

Nicolas Cage is great as usual but The Wicker Man was nothing like I expected it to be. That being said I still enjoyed it.

The Wicker Man has a decent pace, the supporting cast is great, the story is good, but there were too many instances that left you with a wtf? look on your face.

The Wicker Man is creepy and full of suspense and the ending is really freaky (both endings actually).

Final Verdict:

4/5

Rent or Buy?: Rent this one first, just to be sure that you'll like it enough to watch it more than once.

This movie I would have to say is pretty good. It keeps you wondering until the end. This is one movie you will not figure out like you can with alot of movies. It is about a woman contacting her ex which he is a cop played by Nicolas Cage, and she left many him years before without explanation but anyway she contacts him to get his help to find her missing daughter and he goes to help, and ends up finding out the missing little girl is his daughter but the towns people try and make it like the little girl never existed but he figures out she really does, and does everything he can to find her but it turns out to be a big twist in the end it turn out to a trap but I will say no more because I do not want to give up the whole movie but it is a very good movie it will keep you in suspense until the very end. This is a DVD I am glad I have to add to my collection. I will give it a 4.5 stars out of 5, and the only reason I do not give it a five is because I am a big fan of Nicolas Cage, and I do not like what happens to him in the end.

The movie was good, a tad slow at times, but the ending was GREAT. Not at all what I thought it would be, just when I thought I had it, it would change. If you like movies with a twist, your gonna love this one.

All I can Say is What The...?
I was intrigued by the commercials & Fortunatly Rented this. Heck I was excited to find out there is an alternate ending. But Boy oh Boy what is Nicholas Cage getting himself into!!!
Ofcourse we all know He is the perfect cop! Here he is a cop who witnesses the death of a child... He thinks. Later on... He receives a letter from a lady who seems to be connected with him someway. Turns out to be his X-gal. She is desperatly seeking help to find her child. Being the great guy he is, He shows up on their island, Unwanted. Doesnt even seem to connect with this woman he came to help. He keeps finding clues about this girl. Is she dead , Not Dead. Practicly through-out the movie Not much sense is being made of anything. You pick up a bit here & there but nothing substantial. All you know is these are freaking Crazy people with a secret! That Community wants him Badly!!!

Don't Buy it! Rent it, Watch it & Drop your mouth when you see the both of the Horrid Ending!
And you thought the Good Guy always Wins!!

  HUH??
Review created: 01/27/07

This movie was pretty much HUH???? The movie previews only showed the beginning of the movie, most likely because that was the only good part. The rest of it didn't really make sense and the ending left quite a bit to be desired. After my husband and I watched the movie, as the credits started rolling, we both just looked at each other with the "HUH????" look on our faces. All in all, disappointing. Not scary at all.

The wicker man leaves you wanting.....
Review created: 01/21/07

Nicholas Cage is by far one of my favorite actors of all time. I thought the man had done it all. I was wrong. He had not done a truly horrible movie... until now that is.
This is a cult movie that leaves you hanging. It has a definite ending, however, the movie leaves you wanting for more...of anything.
Nicholas Cage as a cop trying to work out of his jurisdiction on an island with a cult of "bee keepers". He finds out that the woman he almost married years ago has lost her child...which, big surprise, turns out to be his child. He goes nuts, looks for and finds the child, gets stung by bees...which he is allergic to...and ends being sacrificed to make the next year's harvest of honey better by being burned inside of.....you guessed it....a wicker man.
The only two good parts of the movie is when Nicholas Cage decks the ugly bar maiden on the island and steals her bear suit and the scene when the cult men break Nicholas Cage's knees over a log.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that the cultists are a matriarchal society where men are seen and not heard. Anyone there ever read the bible? Check with Timothy to see the feelings of Matriarchal.
Anyways, definately not something to watch with the kids, but if you're really bored and want to waste an hour and a half of your life....this will do it!

  A Mysterious Let Down
Review created: 11/17/08

Oh come on Nicholas Cage what were you thinking?..I love Mr. Cages movies, but this one was horrible..Cage plays a nice guy Cop who witnesses what he believes to be the horrible death of a young woman and her little Girl..as his nightmares grow worse he finds out the woman and the little girl never existed...or did they? A few days maybe weeks later he gets a letter from his ex begging for his help in finding her missing daughter..he doesn't find out until much later she's also his daughter..what happens next I admit I did not see coming at all, but this film still disappoints esxpecially if you are a Nicholas Cage fan..I hated the ending and well the entire movie..though it does start out pretty good it loses its appeal once it gets going good which is a sad thing for any movie..the only thing this movie has going for it is Nicholas Cage! I give this film 2 bars out of 5..

Possibly one of the worst movies ever!! Wonderful!

Two words;

"THE BEES."

Definitely a low point in just about everyone's career in this movie, you can't help but love Nick cage doing a strangely manic acting job as Edward Malus, a cop whose taken off to the mysterious Summersisle to look for his missing daughter. It's a terrible movie to the point of being wonderful and therefore gets an excellent rating. Watch it!

Dreadful horror movie. (What was Ellen Burstyn thinking?) I admit I was surprised by the twist ending, but maybe that's because my mind couldn't imagine anything so mean and ugly.

  Awful movie!

I was so excited to see this movie based on the previews. The actual movie seemed to have nothing to do with what the preview portrayed. A terrible movie with an even more horrible ending! Such a let down...especially for a Nicolas Cage movie. Don't bother with this one...

Very Poor Movie, What a Disappointment
Review created: 02/11/07

This movie was confusing from the get go. The story/plot writers obviously wanted to keep some thing secret until later on in the movie but they sure did a poor job of doing so.
The whole time you watch this movie, you can not understand anything that is happening or the motif of what is happening. Very poorly done.
I do not recommend watching this movie let alone buying it. Two thumbs down.

  The Wicker Man

The Wicker Man really wasn't anything I thought it was going to be.

Nicholas Cage plays a policeman who gets a bad start from the get-go. He witnesses the firey death of two people in the beginning of the movie. He is ultimately put on administrative duties to be able to cope with what had happened and is contacted by his ex-fiance who is now living on a remote island and needs his help looking for her missing daughter. Cage spends the rest of the movie being led on a wild goose chase on an island full of defiant and demented women who need someone to sacrifice for their fall harvest.

First off, I am a huge Nicholas Cage fan, but his acting was a little off in this movie. It had no feeling, especially when he was "reconnecting" his romance with his ex. Too many things went unanswered for me, like why the men on the island didn't speak? Little by little, you lose interest during the movie until you get to a horrific ending that's less intense than the director meant to portray. They left the edges a little rough and could have made everyone happy with an alternate ending on the dvd, but it was nothing more than a little bit of extras cut out, probably because of time restrictions.

If it is still something you want to see, don't waste too much money buying it and just rent it. At least then you can take it back to the video store and complain about how bad it was and they'll give you a refund.

Mugging Middle Aged Women For Bearsuits...
Review created: 01/09/07
0 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Pros: Nicolas Cage in a bearsuit
A Large "Wicker Man"
Middle aged women mobbing Nicolas Cage

Cons: Nicolas Cage in a bearsuit.
A weak and confusing ending

Cage's acting woes continue in this remake of the classic British horror flick, "The Wicker Man"

Cage plays a cop with a tortured soul who's lured to an island by his ex to help locate her daughter.

Upon arriving, he's greeted by a violent matriarchal society. Chaos flows from there.

If director 's intent was to make fun of all those British horror fans, he's a master of his craft. But I really don't think that was the idea.

I expected a lot more from actor Nicolas Cage and the great Ellen Burstyn (The Exorcist)but we can't always get what we want.

If you want to have a really good laugh AT a movie. Rent this one and go nuts. You'll be rolling when Nicolas Cage gets mobbed by an army of middle aged woman and beaten senseless. Not meant to be funny, but it really was.
