Album Notes
They Might Be Giants: John Flansburgh (vocals, electric guitar); John Linnell (vocals, accordion, saxophone, bass clarinet).
Additional personnel: Frank London (trumpet); Graham Maby (bass); Brian Doherty (drums, glockenspiel).
Recorded at Excello Studio, Brooklyn, New York and Skyline Studios, New York, New York.
This four-song EP touches on several of They Might Be Giants' musical interests and inclinations. It was also the first glimpse of a They Might Be Giants fleshed out beyond their original duo format, working with a rhythm section and several horn players. The title track (subtitled "The Sun Is A Mass Of Incandescent Gas") is originally from a 1959 educational children's record, and it does handily describe the basic properties of our nearest star.
Two additional covers show the band's skills at finding worthy (and often forgotten) contemporary material and then making it their own. "Jessica" is by the Allman Brothers Band and "Whirlpool" is from The Meat Puppets. "Spy" is an original, which was later re-recorded for their next full-length album, JOHN HENRY.
