Excellent Story Of Unrequited Love with REH !

Wow!

I thought I knew a lot about Robert E Howard, (REH), but this movie added another facet to his life.

The movie is about a Texas school teacher,(Renee Zellweger), who has been dabling with writing while teaching school.

Her old boyfriend introduces her to REH, and she is drawn romantically to him.

However REH is an idiosyncratic writer, (played by Vincent D'Onofrio), of pulp action / adventure / fantasy /horror tales. Actually he describes himself as the 'greatest pulp writer of all'.

However the romance that Novalyn, (the school teacher), wants with REH doesn't go anywere because of REH's Oedipal attachment to his convalescent mother. Add to that problem that REH has some other emotional troubles, such as his attitude towards women, and that he doesn't want to be tied down. Yet he is tied down to his mother, who he could afford to have a home nurse care for, due to his money he makes writing!!

This is definitely an offbeat romantic movie that was based on the memoir "One Who Walked Alone". The book was written by Novalyne Price at 76 years of age about her brief affair with "Conan the Barbarian" creator Robert E. Howard, (REH)).

Tina wanted to watch this for the romantic aspect of the movie. I was thrilled to see it was about REH, who besides creating Conan, also created Solomon Kane, Kull the Conqueror, and Red Sonja!!!

Recommended viewing for those that love REH's works, and you can 'sneak' this in as a 'chick flick' to watch with your loved one!

LOL, Michael

I bought this movie because I am a fan of the actor, Vincent D'Onofrio. What I didn't expect was such a great and early performance of Renee Zellweger also. They made a great team together; just playing off each other so well. The performances are excellent, the scenery is gorgeous, and the music just beautiful. Also outstanding supporting performances by Harve Presnell and Ann Wedgeworth. This movie came out at the same time as "Titanic". It is far superior without all the special effects. It was also shot in one month on a shoestring budget. Just goes to prove that too much money is spent on blockbusters when the real movies that leave such an impact on your mind and heart can be shot with love, professionalism and a minor budget. Would recommend this movie to all. It is a true story, brings history, a biography and yes a beautiful love story to our lives. And has one of the top ten greatest screen kisses. This movie and the performances will stay with you forever.

I bought this movie knowing prefectly well that I wouldn't be dissapointed. As expected Vince D'onofrio deliver a powerful performance, and he was balanced well with Renee Zellweger. A powerful story about the creator of Conan the Barbarian, a brilliant writer, definately ahead of his time. A relistic portrayal of the author and his environment. This film leaves you wanting more about the characters , deeply moving . It will touch your heart in so many ways. Not appropiate for young children.

Insight into the character and life of Robert Howard, creator of Conan the Barbarian. ...All the more remarkable for coming from and producing his creative output in a small Texas town. He created a whole genre, and for the length of the movie the story follows a girl who befriended him and interacted with his world. Interesting and well done.

Good movie which led to reading excellent book
Review created: 05/03/07

I bought this DVD because, after viewing it, I discovered that it was based on a true story as told in the book, One Who Walks Alone. The book is amazing for many reasons, among which the author wrote it when she was 76 years old and it was her first published book. After I read the book, I was so impressed that I bought the DVD, to give as a gift, along with the book, to one of my daughters who also is interested in writing. Sure, the movie isn't 100% faithful to the book, but what movie is. It follows the book well enough. I thought the acting was very well done and complemented the book very well.
