White Nights (DVD, 2006)

This movie is a great movie with Gregory Hines and Michael Barishinkov that dance during the cold war and the plot of the movie is exciting and sometimes sad at times. It really is a great movie to get to share with friends and family. It is mainly a movie for couples to see and the dancing in it is wonderful and the story is great too. I recommend this movie to everyone and also a great family movie to watch. There are a few immodest scenes, but for the most part, it is exciting and has you on the edge of your chair at times dealing with the KGB as they sneak around Old World Russia. Great dancing - interesting story. Set in the pre-Peristroka USSR this features two talented modern dancers, one classically trained and one jazz trained. It is interesting to watch them together and notice the differences in approach.

This is a favorite movie of mine with some wonderful dance scenes. I bought it for this reason alone; but the plot unfolds into a excellent storyline. It's well worth the money paid for it.

This movie gives such an education into the USSR. Thank goodness that they are once again Russia (and other countries). It's hard to believe that the things portrayed in this movie are so real and so scary!
All the actors gave outstanding perfomances. Enjoyable from beginning to end!

I have to watch this movie at least once a year, along with Romero and Michael Collins and a few others. White Nights is everything all rolled into one; romance, music, dance, action, thriller. The script, casting, direction, acting, production values are superb. Pacing is so tight that at the end, I always find myself on the edge of my seat trying not to help the story along by literally yelling "Run! Run! Faster!" I had a scary dream about that scene the night after the movie's first theatre showing, which might've happened even if I hadn't managed to squeeze in 4 viewings that day.

This is one of my favorite "old" movies. The story keeps you interested. The dancing is superb - and I'm not really into musicals. This is not a musical, really. Especially since Gregory Hines has passed away, I enjoyed watching him dance again. Mikail Bareshnikof know I'm not spelling it right - please forgive me, Mikail) is great in it, too. Both are good actors. Since I grew up during the time the story takes place, I understood how it could really happen. Since MB defected years ago, it made it even more interesting. I will definitely keep this movie in my collection.

Good service and easy to find, cataloged well,and carefully packed. Couldn't find it anywhere but Ebay. Netflix didn't carry it----

Wonderful movie!!! I loved the way 2 people from different worlds could make their individual talents flow. I especially loved the part when they were dancing together. I took major interest in focusing on how their body movements were so different even though their steps were the same. A scene in which I thought no matter who the audience is, all could definitely appreciate that moment. It was like watching a feather and a leaf caught in a breeze up on a windy day.

The movie is valuable for those who love dancing and enjoy Baryshnikov and Hines. But the movie is stupid. Think that the KGB cares about a dancer's defection. The movie is bad acting by everyone involve.
But the dancing is magnificent

This movie was a sleeper at first, but if you allow yourself the open-minded attitude all movies deserve at the beginning, you will love the pace this one opens and develops into. I was very surprised to see Mikhail Baryshnikov in a starring role in the movie along side of Gregory Hines!! So many of Hines' movies are interesting with "TAP" being a truly sincere BLOW OUT of a smash HIT!!! It someone had told me that Gregory would be co-starred with Mikhail and both their dancing styles showcased, I would have called them a liar. For sure!!

This movie could also be one that represents the final gripping clutches and control of the "Iron Curtain". People want to be free, in so many ways, in their lives. The movie definitely displays the frustrations and heartache that occurs when the stars desperately try to openly express themselves and to escape the oppression of the K.G.B., Russia's premiere police and intelligence agency. However, as time goes by, they eventually realize that they both want to be free in so many ways and finally begin to trust one another towards that goal.

What makes this movie so dramatic and full of sheer talent, is the ways they show each other their greatest talents and realize no matter how different that they may be, they are also so much alike. Their dance challenges, that arise from daily workouts, are pretty cool and use some great music soundtracks. As they perform their dance routines and listen to the music in their apartment, the music serves a dual purpose (when loudly played) of masking their plans of escape from the K.G.B. The longer they are able to play the music loudly, the longer time they have to put their escape attempt in motion. They also have to be careful at the same time, not to allow a love-hate relationship to come between them (in the role of Gregory Hines' wife). It eventually serves to make their emotions boil over with hatred...much to the delight of their captors. The K.G.B. proves to be as evil as we Americans want to believe that they are, and we too begin to cheer for any plans that the stars can come up with to escape, and to rub the K.G.B.s noses in the mud!!

While this movie may not have been a blockbuster at the theaters, it has many elements that make a good movie great! The escape, at the end is original and full of suspence, and will hold your interest to the end. I would advise anyonne to see and enjoy this movie and to add it to your collection. You will agree.

i grew up watching this movie & its great to see it again after so many years. its got great music & dancing, as well as a touching story. truely a great movie.

Fantastic movie. The story line is unique, and both Baryshnikov and Hines do well with their roles. Movies with the quality of performers, excellent story line and musical score that you remember long after viewing the movie do not come along very often, but this is one of those and worth the money.

Love this move and am happy to finally own it on DVD. My mother and I our big dance fans. Thank you so much.

Terrific look at the cold war relations, hardships faced by people, a juxtaposition of beginnings - one fled freedom while the other fled oppression and control - to find a common ending. Mystery, intrigue, incredible dancing skill, great story!

An EXCELLENT movie! It captures the tensions between the USA and the USSR as it was in the 70's and 80's but is now almost totally unknown by the new generation. The music is supurb, the dancing timelessly fancinating. The plot keeps you on the edge of your seat even as you are dazzled by the unsurpassed acting ablity of the stars. If you missed it in the 1980's now is the time to get it and see it!

Came in excellent condition, couldn't be better. Great person to work with, would absolutely love to buy from him again.

White Nights is a definate classic film in our household. Our old VHS verson is grainy and skips in some sections. I have been looking for the DVD version for some years. I was a little dissapointed that they did not try to do some reviews with former actors directors, etc.

The dancing of Baryshnikov and Hines is something you will not see anywhere else today. The control of the ballet dancer and the loose body movements of the tap dancer is riviting as you watch them make the same moves but look so different in doing them. The story is good for the times. We had two Russian teachers stay with us around this time. It was a very eye opening experience for us as the the life of Russian citizians.

The story line is a little week, but the dancing and music are a good enough reasons to add this to your classis collection of DVDs.

I love this movie; true, the acting is not always superb but it's a good story and the dancing is wonderful. I would call it a classic and highly recommend it for dancing enthusiasts and those who just enjoy a well told story with a decently happy ending.

Story-a defected Russian ballet star (Mikhail Byrznikov-sp?) is returned via airline malfunction to his home land and taken prisoner. An American tap-dancer, also a defector (Gregory Hines) and his wife (Isabella Rossellini) are assigned to watch over him and convince him to stay in Russia willingly. The promises made to all of them soon deteriorate and it becomes clear that they all need to flee the country.

Actors-Baryshnikov is an excellent dancer, but sometimes his acting is a bit off and he tends towards the overly dramatic. Hines also has some weakness on screen. However, they are both tghe best at what they do, and that is dancing. This film is awesome in that respect and you will probably want to just watch these sequences as they are high-energy and really demonstrate why they both are considered tops in their fields. Although Hines is no longer with us, this movie shows him in his prime, while Baryshnikov reportedly said that he was not in shape to do this film. If I could be so out of shape!

Overall-there's not an oscar-winning performance in the entire movie, but this movie is about dancers doing what they do best-performing.

I bought this movie for my Mother, it is one of her favorites! And mine, the dancing is excellent. The acting is also great for the time... A good movie to see and then watch again skipping to the dance scenes! The only down side to this DVD is that there are no additional bonus features. I wish that they could have dug up some old interviews or made a docu about the people in it... I would have also LOVED to see a current interview with all surviving members!
