The First MUST READ for Children: Red Fern

I had never read Where the Red Fern Grows until I read it to my 4th graders when I was 45. It was new to me. Red Fern has such flowing style, hilarity and sadness so simply written that it feels like you actually get to live in the Ozarks with Billy and his dogs, if only in the movie played in your mind. When we neared the ending of the book I had to stop reading several times because I couldn't see the words anymore. Fourth graders are amazed when a book has the power to move their teacher to tears, and mine were rapt. A few of the more sensitive children were also teary-eyed. This book is perfect proof of what parents and teachers try to get children to believe: BOOKS ROCK!!!

An excellent book for all ages. I had heard of Where the Red Fern grows for some time before I read it. It was worth the wait for this is a heart warming tale of a boy and his love for his dogs. More than than, it touches on the things that matter in life--love, faith, courage, hope, and the joy of living. It is a breath of fresh air in a world that has grown too much with itself.

This is a book I truly love. I read this to my kids when they were in elementary school. We all enjoyed it. Of course, we cried our guts out at the end. But, it's still a great read.

The story is about a young boy who saves his money to buy 2 hunting dogs. He and the dogs share wonderful adventures together. Just read it!

Was familiar with the story and wanted my 8 year old grandson to have a personal copy. He has viewed the video with us and requests it all the time.
It is a story of a boy and his love for his dogs. I wish all boys could have and experience such as this or simular. Anyone looking for a story to get lost in could really enjoy this. It tells of simplier time and life style.

This book is a "must have" for anyone who has a love for dogs! For me, it brought back memories of my relationships with my trustworthy dog and my grandfather! Although both are gone, their influence on my life has been monumental.

A timeless classic that every child should read

This is a must read for every child especially in todays jumbled up world. The simplicity and appreciation for the hard times of yesterday and how much a bond between a boy and the love of a dog can make us all appreciate the simple things in life. It was read to me when I was in the fourth grade and now that my son is in the 3rd grade I got it to read to him at bedtime. The only thing is that he can't understand why I'm usually sobbing within three minutes of reading. I don't know if it takes me back to my childhood or whether I just know how special this entire book is and what is coming. Please do yourself a favor, no matter how old or young you are, and lose yourself in the mountains and the dreams of a young boy.

  Really Really Really Sad Book

It made me cry! It is so heartfelt. I love books that tug at the heartstrings. This book is so sweet and it is almost a love story, except with a boy and his 2 dogs. If you dont feel a rush of emotion while reading this book, you may not have a heart.
