When I Look in Your Eyes by Diana Krall (CD, Jun-1999, Impulse!)

I seem to have fallen into a thing for female vocalists lately. Chanteuse Diana Krall has been spending a lot of time spinning away in my cd player, and I'm steadily hunting down her discography in my library's catalog. It's a blend of smooth vocals, excellent piano and bass work, and just enough sensuality to give this cd a mix that is irresistible. There's something of the vamp in this collection, and the songs are alternately funny, sad, and every emotion in between. I had the pleasure last year of seeing Diana Krall from the fourth row orchestra of the Wang Center. She sings and plays piano with a small ensemble of musicians. Although the Wang Center is a concert hall that seats a few thousand people, Diana Krall still made me feel like I was in a small intimate jazz club. (Being in the fourth row didn't hurt). Taking a cue from the sixth track "I've Got You Under My Skin", I played this Grammy nominee CD over and over to see if it would, indeed, work its way into my core. With many albums in my collection, I've grown to appreciate some even more with repeated playings. I first heard about Diana Krall from a female friend who teaches voice and sings cabaret style music. I'm glad she recommended her.
