How does an artist follow up not only the best album of their career but probably the best country album of the year? That was Patty Loveless' dilemma after her 1993 gold album, ONLY WHAT I FEEL. Fortunately, Loveless sets all minds to rest with the spectacular WHEN FALLEN ANGELS FLY.
Patty Loveless is one of country music's strongest vocalists, a favorite duet/harmony partner of many country artists, especially super-vocalist Vince Gill. Her voice is the mournful call of the hills of Kentucky, powerful and proud, yet expressive and vulnerable. She brings a spiritual and graceful depth to her material, especially the ballads, her forte. From the wrenching "You Don't Even Know Who I Am" to the hushed "Over My Shoulder" Loveless offers pristine classics, and once again hits her artistic zenith. Then she switches gears and has fun with the novelty hit "I Think About Elvis" and rocks out with the Rolling Stones-ish "Old Weakness (Coming On Strong)." Her songs are varied, but always mature and haunting.
Patty Loveless is a stylist in the classic sense, an interpreter extraordinaire. Her song selection is impeccable, her production crisp and reverent. Pros:
Some nice ballads, less twang for your buck

Think About Elvis is grating, one song too slow and traditional for me<BR/>

Patty Loveless has enchanted country fans with her countrified sound and endearing songs since the 80 s. I never really became infatuated with her sound until her 199 effort called When Fallen Angels Fly. Such overly redneck tunes such as Timber I m Fall In Love reminded me of a female Randy Travis and that was definitely something I REALLY wanted to avoid. I was pretty surprised when she came out with this album sporting a tamer twang and for the most part songs that really grabbed my attention. A Handful of Dust is a very charming song that opens the album. Discussing what makes humans...

Loveless Sure Isn't "Talentless"

Patty Loveless' 1994 album, "When Fallen Angles Fly", is one of her best. The Country Music Association was aware of this when they named it the CMA's Album of the Year in that same October. PROGRAM ---------- Loveless has a very smooth, controlled voice which can be powerful when need be, but also gentle. Her first track here, "A Handful Of Dust", is a mid-tempo country song about self-worth and good self-esteem. It makes a nice opener for the album. "Halfway Down" is a slightly more uptempo song with another positive message--things may bring you down in life, but if you keep your head up,..
