Album Notes Oasis: Noel Gallagher (vocals, guitar, E-Bow, piano, Mellotron); Liam Gallagher (vocals); Paul Arthurs (guitar, piano, Mellotron); Paul McGuigan (bass); Alan White (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Paul Weller (guitar, background vocals); Tony McCarroll (drums). Recorded at Rockfield Studios, South Wales, United Kingdom. "Wonderwall" was nominated for 1997 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. The state of English popular music in the mid-'90s will be looked back upon as a time when groups like Blur, Supergrass and Oasis rode the UK charts with a style (nicknamed Brit-Pop by that country's press) that fused the 1960s pop aesthetic of the Beatles, Kinks and Small Faces with the flamboyance and cocksuredness of T. Rex and the Buzzcocks. But (WHAT'S THE STORY) MORNING GLORY? is a more tempered follow-up to Oasis' 1994 debut, DEFINITELY MAYBE, the band having gone from enfant terrible to dreamy romantic this time round. Oasis has also crossed the Atlantic this time; (WHAT'S THE STORY) MORNING GLORY has made the band a major U.S. success. Toning down the brattiness, Oasis guitarist/songwriter Noel Gallagher brings minimal orchestration into the mix, while still mining for inspiration in the past. A buzzing amp cues up the opening cut, "Hello," before giving way to a thunderous rocker that credits Gary Glitter as a co-writer by way of a line lifted from his "Hello, Hello, I'm Back Again." The innovative use of strings on songs like "Cast No Shadow," "Wonderwall" and "Don't Look Back In Anger" avoids any mawkishness, leaning more towards a melancholy sheen. Such ambitious chance-taking turns "Don't Look Back In Anger" into a grand epic that has singer Liam Gallagher sounding like Ian Hunter to brother Noel's Mick Ronson. All these external tools do nothing to detract from Oasis' ability to play rock and roll with a religious fervor. The first version of "The Swamp Song" (the untitled track 6) is a bluesy, instrumental rave-up complete with a wailing harmonica that sounds unlike anything they've done before. It's followed by "Some Might Say," a sweeping epic layered with chunky riffs. While new pal Paul Weller's guitar lends some grit to "Champagne Supernova," the best song on MORNING GLORY is "She's Electric," a '90s equivalent to "Itchycoo Park" with the end-chorus of "With A Little Help From My Friends" grafted onto it. Oasis's 1995 Album 'Whats the Story Morning Glory' set the music world on fire and had people everywhere - including the band themselves - wondering if this was the reincarnation of The Beatles. Brothers and frontmen Liam and Noel Gallagher did that one better - proclaiming that they were bigger and better than The Beatles. I won't touch that statement... but I will say that Whats the Story Morning Glory was a marvelous album. Unfortunately the band's ultimate potential and success was compromised by the brothers' destructive behaviors and relationship. While Oasis has left much of its potential unfulfilled and unsatisfied - they achieved near perfection with this album. In my persepctive, the best part of the album is its range - the tracks vary in tone, agressiveness, flamboyance and softness - equally important, the transitions between those differences are natural and easy. To the listener, its a comfortable move from the harmonica and blues on track #6 (the Swamp Song) to the guitar riff-heavy "Some Might Say" and so on. The end result is a true rock-and-roll album that is as much pop as it is blues and as much fun as it is powerful. The most popular song Wonderwall (track #3) was nominated for the 1997 Grammy's Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance - and rightly so. The track is perfectly balanced - great lyrics, great vocals, better guitar. A song that is as enjoyable the first listen as the 10th. Review ID: 10000000000000339 Was this review helpful? I will always love this album - it cam out during my final year 95/96 at University and gave us all something to listen to while studying for Finals!! Oasis will never be my favorite group on account of all their stupid antics, but this cannot take away from the quality of their music - particularly the tracks on 'What's the Story'. Already a huge act in Britain on account of 'Definately Maybe' this new CD gave them worldwide recognition, with 12 quality songs; each as good , if not better than the next! This took Britpop to a whole new level - and the trend was fronted by Oasis! The mid 90s did not produce a great deal of memorable music...coming after the demise of Grunge, the musical scene was pitiful at best, but Oasis produced some of the standout songs of this period - Don't look Back in Anger, WonderWall and Champagne Supernova were superb tracks, and instantly recognizable. In the UK they just had hit after hit....catchy Roll with It, Morning Glory...the album is rare in that every track is excellent!! If you only get one Oasis album...make this classic a home in your collection! Review ID: 10000000001826496 Was this review helpful? Report this review Reviews This is one of my favorite cds of the 1990's. Their debut was just as good, but this had a more developed sound. Noel was underrated in terms of his talent. Providing the words and music is not simple. They weren't played too much after 1997. This was a highlight for them. I consider the 1990's my favorite decade as a whole. Heavy and melodic could describe many groups (pearl jam/nirvana/creed). This basically is one of the best of the decade and I have yet to tire of it. sp Review ID: 10000000006711473 Was this review helpful?
