First of all a confession, I am a big fan of his John Dortmunder novels. And I hate to be disappointed but it happens sometimes... even for good authors. NOT this time!

And his "gang" of misfits with their own set of problems is present too and sort of "help" him out of his predicament... For a healthy fee of course!

All I am going to say is this caper involves a gold chess set that is worth a lot of money and weighs over 300 pounds and is stuck in a underground bank vault. And poor John is being blackmailed in doing this caper by an ex-police officer and John can't hide.

So find out how John manages his career path and saves the day at the end! Well... sort of.
