Although Frankie J's WHAT'S A MAN TO DO is pushed along by hip-hop-derived rhythms and production, he's an old-school soul singer at heart. That's not to say that there are homages to Marvin Gaye or Al Green here, simply that J eschews the hyper-melismatic approach of many lesser contemporaries in favor of a smooth, understated style that values hooks and melody over vocal showboating. Frankie's first and foremost a romantic balladeer, and while there are a couple of percolating tracks, this is mostly an album of slow jams built on and for intimacy. J knows just how much to put into his performances without overextending himself, and he remains a believable seductor throughout. Things end on a nice touch with the Spanish-language, piano-based ballad "Ya No Es Igual," hinting at the possibilities of a Latin-pop crossover.
