In my life I've wondered what my Heaven would look like. Would it be of my own personal likes or would it be the same as everyone elses? While this movie doesn't answer that question it is a great love story. To see True love endure through the torments of life was truly inspiring.
Robin Williams who is generally a comedian did an excellent job in playing in this serious role.

This is a really wonderful film about life, love, and death. It is a fantasy with beautiful colors and incredible scenery. Robin Williams is fantastic in this serious role, as well as all of the other actors in the film.

I read the book (which of course was 10x better), but seeing the movie brought so much visual to the read, it was worth it. Great actors and wonderful artistry. Made wanting to read the book and see the movie again something you wanted to do right away. Even went on eBay and bought it!!

The Afterlife Isn't What Chris Expected
Review created: 02/16/08(updated 02/16/08)
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

If I wanted to be cynical about this film, I could say that the moral is not to get out of the car and help at the scene of an accident. That's what gets Chris Nielsen (Robin Williams) killed. Of course, I'm not giving anything away here, since this happens at the beginning of the movie, after a short prologue that offers glimpses of Chris' marriage to his wife, Annie (Annabella Sciorra). In more than a decade of bliss, there was only one dark period. Four years ago, Chris and Annie's two children, Marie (Jessica Brooks) and Ian (Josh Paddock), died in a car crash and now, tragically, Chris has joined them. One moment, he's trying to help someone trapped in a wreck; the next, he's making his way into the light.

As it turns out, the afterlife isn't what Chris expected. To begin with, he has a guide - an old mentor named Albert (Cuba Gooding Jr.). He spends some time wandering around on Earth - looking in at his funeral, checking on his grief-stricken wife, and generally seeing how the world is progressing without him. Eventually, when he realizes that his continued ghostly presence is causing Annie pain, he quits this realm and heads into heaven, a place of colors, light, and beauty. But Chris is not content. Even the realization that he can again meet with his children is not enough. Then an event occurs that threatens to sever his connection with Annie forever.

What Dreams May Come has the sensibilities of an art film placed into a big-budget feature with an A-list cast. Although it is undeniably a tear-jerker, it's probably not mainstream enough to enthrall audiences and assure a big return at the box office. It is arguably too offbeat. The storyline, which has Chris relishing the serenity of heaven before taking a trip through hell, is compelling, even if the ending is a little too cute. Part of the reason the movie works is that the characters are likable. Most of us would love to have the kind of relationship that Chris and Annie enjoyed, so it's not hard to root for them to somehow find each other again, even with the chasm of death dividing them. Also, the production design is truly amazing, coming in second only to Dark City for the most visually arresting picture of the year (with the upcoming Pleasantville a close third).

The presence of Max von Sydow immediately conjures up associations with the work of legendary film maker Ingmar Bergman, and, indeed, there's something almost Bergman-esque about What Dreams May Come. This film is about life, death, and the connection between the two - themes that Bergman explored more than once. Granted, von Sydow was a lot younger when he appeared in The Seventh Seal, but the link is there. However, it's worth mentioning that had Bergman made this film, the ending would not have been as hopelessly crowd-pleasing.

Watching What Dreams May Come is like observing a series of paintings come to life. Director Vincent Ward's view of heaven is surreal and spectacular, with special effects enhancing everything from the subtle greens of the mosses and grass to the crimsons, violets, oranges, and blues of the flower petals. It's a place where thought determines reality.

  The Book is Better
Review created: 09/08/06

This movie had great potential, and I really looked forward to seeing it. The book is truly amazing, and had hoped the movie would be as well. I think the movie does an average job of capturing the mood of the story, and the detail is also just average. I recommend you read the book first, then see the movie. While not bad, it is just a bit disapointing after reading the amazing book.

Visually stunning, emotionally and intellectually satisfying. Another Robin Williams gem. Please submit 100 characters for review. 'Kay. Everything from the title to the "paintings" in the film are interesting and evolved. The plot questions the purpose of life and/or God without venturing into the fun-filled land of evangelism. Visually challenging and lovely, superb acting (no flaws or weak links), amazing concept. To be or not to be. No matter how we answer, it comes eventually. Do you fear the dreams that come?

I originally won this for my wife because she wanted to have it to own and watch whenever she wanted to.We watched it and enjoyed the day it came in the mail. It's a very interesting movie about life and death and how people deal with tragedy.I recommend it to anyone who has just suffered with losing a loved one as we had in this past January.I think Annabella,Cuba and Robin do fine acting in this movie and they all have interesting characters.

i saw this movie once and really enjoyed it- looked for it in stores and wasnt able to find it- but found it on ebay
the imagination in this film is amazing portays the afterlife with great symbolism - and the story line ( death by accident and suicide) come out very clearly. my favorite is the way they show the afterlife as a gorgeous place of robin williams favorite things- on the other hand the suicide is more gorry and dark
this is still one of my favorite films.

Review created: 11/09/09(updated 11/09/09)

Well, I saw this movie a long time ago and remembered it being a good movie. So, I bid on it and won it on Ebay. Now that I watched it again. I still think it is a good movie but certainly not an upbeat film. It's traumatic and sad. It's one of those movies that I don't think I will watch again for a very long time and will probably collect dust before I decide to re Ebay it. It's just very sad and depressing but yet is a good movie. I don't know, see it for yourself, maybe just rent it first unless you can get it for as cheap as a rental price. I am a big fan of Robbin Williams and like Cuba Gooding Jr. too. Their Acting is as always, good. It's just not a feel good film. However it is definitely a movie that is emotional and thought provoking.

  Absolutely Beautiful....
Review created: 10/06/09

This is an extrodinary movie. I've often wondered what would heaven be like. After I lost my Dad to cancer at 59 years old, I wondered even more. I just wanted to know if he was Ok, was he happy, if he still knew me as his daughter? This movie answered so many of my questions and more. If it is anything like displayed in this movie, I know I will see him again. This movie is beautifully written and the actors were extrodinary. Thank you.
