Album Notes
The B-52s: Fred Schneider, Cindy Wilson, Kate Pierson (vocals); Keith Strickland (guitar, keyboards, drums); Ricky Wilson (guitar, bass).
Additional personnel: Ralph Carney (saxophone); David Buck (trumpet).
Recorded at Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas in December 1982.
Opening with "Legal Tender," a paean to counterfeiting, WHAMMY is the B-52s' return to form after the previous year's David Byrne-led detour into more experimental territory (MESOPOTAMIA). Comprising a richer and fuller sound without compromising on the band's economy of sound, WHAMMY is an enjoyable work.
Highlights include the aural personal ad "Song for a Future Generation," the rockin' legume tune "Butterbean," and the sci-fi "Moon 83" (replacing Yoko Ono's "Don't Worry" on this reissue). The album veers into the ridiculous-even by B-52s standards-on "Big Bird," a track about (what else?) a big bird flying over the B-52s' house. This one actually features some cool horn sounds by guests Ralph Carney and David Buck. The closing "Work that Skirt" is a workmanlike instrumental that showcases some great percussion programming. An '80s album through and through, WHAMMY is one worth investigating.
